Could Chadwick Boseman theoretically win 2 Oscars this year and become the first actor to do so in one year?
ReplyJanuary 27, 2021 at 11:42 am #1204005221I think there’s a path to victory in both of his eligible categories, but if he’s winning, it’s one or the other, not both.
I still think he’s extremely deserving for Ma Rainey, but I’d be rather disappointed to see him make the cut for 5 Bloods. He’s obviously very good in it, but the role is so small, and outside of his last scene, it gives him little material to give a great performance. Peters and Majors are much more deserving.

January 27, 2021 at 11:47 am #1204005232This has never happened for a living actor even when a case could be made that it would’ve been well-deserved, and I honestly think there would be less incentive, not more, to bestow such an honour on someone who is not here to enjoy it or benefit from it. One posthumous Oscar is fine; two would definitely be considered excessive.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 27, 2021 at 11:48 am #1204005235He could be nominated for both… he will win for Ma’ and deserved. Both Hopkins and him are virtually tied, but I mean… how do you tiebreak? Posthumous Oscar, of course.
I think he shouldn’t even be nominate for Da 5 Bloods. I mean, seriously. There’s like 3 other performances I preferred over him.

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 27, 2021 at 12:29 pm #1204005316I don’t think he will even get double-nominated. But Da 5 Bloods will definetely add some buzz to his nomination and presumably win for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

January 27, 2021 at 12:33 pm #1204005321Most actors in recent years who get double nominated lose both. So even with the posthumous element he’ll only win one.
It makes sense – most voters, when looking at someone with two noms, will pick their favourite performance and vote there. I actually don’t think anyone will ever do it.

I can’t believe Netflix is riding and capitalising on the Boseman narrative instead of giving Jonathan Majors the push he deserves. You have Jonathan Majors doing the most supporting work and you’re pushing Chadwick Boseman? That’s unfair. Majors won’t always get this opportunity

Majors has the rest of his life for this opportunity… and he’s quite good, so I’m sure there are many deserved noms to come. I think Majors actually fell flat in the landmine moment of the film; I didn’t feel the stakes that I felt from the other characters. Boseman isn’t “fraudulently” in the running; it’s a clear supporting performance whether one thinks it’s deserved or not.

Majors did much more than Boseman. Even the old men were better than Boseman. Boseman was better than Mahershala Ali in Moonlight though.
The thing is, Majors doesn’t seem to be a hot cake like Kaluuya, Stanfield or even Kelvin Harrison Jnr. But I pray Majors blows out. He’s an incredible actor who should have been considered for The Last Black Man in San Francisco
