I just came home from seeing Atlantics and the cinematography was truly breathtaking. Unfortunately I haven’t yet been able to see the other film shot by Claire Mathon, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, as it hasn’t been released where I live, but if Mathon were winning critics awards for only Atlantics it would be fully deserved. Oddly, while she won for both films at LAFCA and NSFC, she won the NYFCC award only for Portrait. However Atlantics is also eligible for categories other than International Film, and it just received a DGA nomination for Best First Feature. It’s also shortlisted for International Film while Portrait wasn’t submitted, so that could possibly work to the former film’s advantage. Or perhaps Mathon’s two projects split the vote and she misses out; or worse, both are non-factors with the branch. (Atlantics isn’t actually in the predictions centre so we can’t predict it even if it is happening.)
How about we nominate both and kick out Rodrigo Prieto for The Irishman? I think Prieto is pretty great usually (Brokeback Mountain, Babel, and Silence are all gorgeous and well-composed cinematography) but The Irishman’s cinematography was mid as fuck.
