i’m CACKLING at Spotlight losing a guild nom in the ONE below-the-line it is strongest at.

    CACKLING.

That would be the WGA. And it’s going to get it.

Wheeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.   That’s a BIG victory for the future domestic boxoffice champion of all time.  And the inexplicable insurgency campaign for MMFR continues.

WGA is above the line, sweetie.

From wikipedia: “The ‘line’ in below-the-line is the one separating the Actors, Director, Producers, and Writers from the other crew.”

The guild went fully for ”most cuts” this year. All the five Drama nominees are somehow could be considered action pieces. When was the last time that happened?
I know the editing guild, out of all, has to go for these kinds of movies first, but man, there’s not even one classic Oscar-type movie in that lineup.  I know everyone’s focusing on Spotlight right now but where’s Carol, Room, or Bridge of Spies? And this guild have nominated The Imitation Game, Her, Saving Mr. Banks, Lincoln, Up in the Air in recent years. Not having a flashy editing can’t be considered an excuse.

Even if we take Sicario’s nomination with a grain of salt, the rest still looks so bold choices for the Holywood.
Maybe 3 sci-fi movies making the cut in Best Picture lineup at the same time, is not completely out of the question after all?

Only two guilds have announced their nominations so far. And the only movie that got in for both is The Big Short.(But who knows, maybe it wouldn’t have made it in here if it competed as a Drama.) Man, what a weird year.

This is not the year of the small independent film, this is the year of the huge blockbusters. It is why I believe a huuuge film is winning this year.

This means that spotlight might not get nominated for Best Director.

LOL. You’re the only one who keeps on grappling for an explanation. Stay pressed.

Well well well, Spotlight misses out…might not mean it’s out of the race, but I have a feeling this could be between Mad Max and The Big Short for best picture now…

The editing for “Spotlight” was perfectly fine. It’s not out of contention by any means. Most editing doesn’t equate best editing. It’s more of an accomplishment than “Joy”‘s editing for example (different categories, I know), where the editing was so haphazard and tonally disjointed with even FOUR credited editors.

Before anyone bring the last year race…well that was a fluke because of the way Birdman was edited and strong competition. Spotlight is in trouble.

The Oscar needs to get rid of the preferential ballot so it can name a deserving movie as Best Picture again.

The precedent was set before “Birdman” with “Ordinary People,” so winning BP without Editing might be flukey, but it’s not impossible. Until the other guilds chime in, I’ll take this as being one random “Spotlight” snub. The ACE/DGA correlation is also less convincing with double the slots for ACE to choose from than DGA.
