What was it in your experience?
Think it was 2022. Cruz and Stewart over Gaga, Buckley and Dench over Balfe, Simmons and Plemmons, Villanevue snub… phew
This year, though: Riseborough, Henry and the Top Gun cinematography miss..

February 2, 2023 at 10:38 am #1205281013I keep forgetting TGM missed in Cin. But Claudio has won before and the others are knocking on the door again.
Really, Riseborough wins for craziest.
It’s not inconceivable that she can win, given her complex perf.

I prefer my roses whiteFebruary 2, 2023 at 10:39 am #1205281024From the top of my head, I’d say 2013 was the craziest.
DGA only going 2/5, with Affleck missing despite winning everything.
Marion Cotillard, John Hawkes and Javier Bardem missing despite hitting most of the precursors. Altho, I think Cotillard was the only one that made all four of them. And on the opposite side, Jacki Weaver making the cut while making zero precursors.
Crazy overperformance of Beasts of the Southern Wild, especially in Directing.

That directing lineup… the messiest in history
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 2, 2023 at 11:07 am #1205281081Not citing a particular year or responding as intended but here are some “unusual” nominees:
In 1984 P.H. Vazak was nominated for Adapted Screenplay for Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. The only problem is that P.H. was a Hungarian sheepdog owned by Robert Towne (who among other things, directed and wrote Chinatown). Towne had taken his name off the Greystoke screenplay because he was so annoyed by the studio’s edits.
In 1958 novelist Pierre Boulle was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for Bridge Over the River Kwai. One minor point- Boulle didn’t speak English, (although he DID write the novel on which the film was based). The actual screenplay was written by the blacklisted writers, Carl Foreman and Michael Wilson.
In 1997 and 2008 Roderick Jaynes was nominated for Best Editing for Fargo and No Country for Old Men. The Coen Brothers have described Jaynes as “a crusty veteran of British cinema in his late 80s whom they met through Roger Deakins.” In fact, Roderick Jaynes is a pseudonym the Coen Brothers sometimes use when they edit their own films.

Ang Lee
Steven Spielberg
Ben Affleck
Kathryn Bigelow
Michael HanekeThis literally could have been a GOAT-ed Best Director line-up. And the fact they snubbed most of the front-runners but kept O’RUSSELL of all people, JAIL!

I’ll go to my grave with my proudest achievement being predicting that nomination

We forget a big part of the reason that year was so weird was the calender was so off. Oscar nominations came out BEFORE the globes and the critics choice award ceremonies even happened, so the nominations came out, Affleck got snubbed, and then if I remember correctly THAT VERY NIGHT he won the globe for best director and then a few days later won the critics choice award. Such a weird year.

They should try this calendar again.

Thanks for this. Globes, Critics Choice are so influential. I am sure he won’t have been snubbed had the academy gotten the chance to vote for nominations after his wins. A lot of these stats are a response to how the calendar gets mapped out.

And people here always claim that CC has no influence whatsoever just because they nominate everyone. Now they’re even saying GG don’t matter for whatever reason

She was in a BP frontrunner and was predicted by some people. Jackie Weaver is the GOAT here. Silver Linings Playbook over performed for sure, but it wasn’t a surefire frontrunner anywhere and was called a mess by a lot of people. We didn’t see her friends campaigning for her like Riseborough
