While I don’t love EEAAO and Michelle Y is not an actress I revere I can see why POCs and Asians in particular might want her to win. I am Chinese and my entire family is rooting for her. Cate is one of my favorite actors so I am biased. I know Cate will get another opportunity but she is over 50. But I know this may be Michelle’s only real opportunity to win given her age and her race. I have met Cate a few times and she would be happy either way. I will be happy either way as well.
Thank you for being objective. Hope others can see the importance of Yeoh’s win as well.

And if EEAAO wins BP, then kiss Dune 2’s chances goodbye, and it doesn’t matter if Villeneuve makes the Citizen Kane of SF films. EEAAO is just so unworthy when compared to an Inception, Force Awakens, Dune, Arrival, Avengers: Endgame.
The way EEAAO is actually better than all of these films

January 15, 2023 at 11:01 pm #1205247241Doing promotion tours for the film are standard. Cate is a big enough star to not attend award ceremonies, if she wanted. She wants to win, the whole act is kind of ridiculous. She did the same thing during Blue Jasmine.
Yeah, I think this whole situation has to be uncomfortable for everyone involved. On the one hand, you’ve never had an Asian actress winner and only one POC winner with Halle Berry in Best Actress 21 years ago. On the other hand, Cate clearly loves winning awards and she’s given perhaps a career best performance.
This is the only realistic spot to award TAR, a film that won the Trifecta in Best Film. We also have to think about Todd Field, has never been rewarded at the Oscars and looks to walk away empty handed at the Oscars even though this is his baby and his best critically reviewed film. I also think of Lee Isaac Chung and how he poured his heart and soul into his personal childhood story in Minari. However, the Oscars gave him personally nothing and his film only got Supporting Actress because the chips fell that way & that was the only place they could find to reward his film.
Does anyone think Frances McDormand doesn’t like winning awards? She was up against two black actresses, Viola Davis and Andra Day, in her category going for history too 2 years ago. However, because of the weight of the historical significance of the category, Frances can’t just explode with happiness which is why her speech was so somber and short compared with her speech 3 years before.
Cate’s just being kind of self deprecating but what she said during the speech about how we shouldn’t have awards or have women in competition with each other doesn’t make any real sense. She seemed really happy to win her 2nd Volpi Cup. I’m not sure she could “withdraw” from the competition like Garth Brooks did with the CMA Entertainer of the Year award (not officially) or Oprah did at the Daytime Emmys. Maybe she was just signaling her discomfort about being pitted against Yeoh and the other women, but that’s how awards season works.
Remember that when they’re rewarding a performance, they’re also rewarding the film too. When they awarded Olivia Colman, they’re awarding The Favourite. That’s why you rarely see a critically disliked film winning an acting award.

Of course people love winning awards. Frances was very muted not because she was embarrassed, she truly looked overwhelmed with emotion and even pointed to both Carey and Viola.
And yes we have see. Critically disliked film win acting awards. Bohemian Rhapsody, The Iron Lady, Eyes Of Tammy Faye, Judy, Blind Side, The Reader, Joker. It happens more often than not.

Not a chance in hell. Endgame was a generational event, the payoff after nearly 20 movies before it. And it delivered. A movie shouldn’t be punished in Oscar season for making too much money.

I enjoyed Endgame and EEAAO. I’ll watch endgame if I want an exciting blockbuster night with my friends or revisit memory lane when Secret Wars arrives. I’ll watch EEAAO if I want something more serious and deep. Nobody really has to insult the other just because of different opinions.
With that said, a movie being a “generational event” does not mean it is better than other sci-fi/ fantasy films. Add to the fact that Endgame took so many movies before achieving it’s payoff, whereas EEAAO only did it with one.
Also, making too much money isn’t really a problem for oscar season. Avatar before did well, and so will the second (hopefully), despite gaining huge box office numbers.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2023 at 4:31 am #1205247519They messed up Editing AGAIN. I think it’s because they don’t really get this category so they rarely nail it. Top Gun is winning both that and Sound. They should have gone with a tie like Sound of Metal/Trial.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2023 at 7:30 am #1205247692Horrible show. Insanely boring. And Brendan Fraser (a mess), Ke Huy Kuan (on the verge of Sally Fielding it), Sheryl Lee Ralph and Cate Blanchett (then don’t come, darling) need to cool it with those overblown over the top long ass pompous speeches.
My God, when even Jennifer Coolidge was like “fuck it, thank you, bye.”
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2023 at 7:31 am #1205247699Banshees going home empty handed is a bit concerning. I have a feeling it will go 0-5 at SAG. It’ll probably ONLY win Original Screenplay at BAFTA unless if Farrell does wins Best Actor there and I believe the same will also be at the Oscars with them ONLY winning Screenplay ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️

This could be (ironically) a Three Billboards v. Get Out situation with EEAAO taking CCA and WGA (due to ineligibility) and getting enough support to pass GG/BAFTA Winner Banshees

I don’t think they were going for potential Oscar winners in every category because in that case, they won’t have awarded TAR in the score. A category it is ineligible in!
