This feels so so obvious it shouldn’t need to be said, but seriously f**k this Critics PREDICTIONS Awards for nominating Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in so many major categories. Recognition of this epic mess as one of the year’s best will forever hurt the credibility of these awards, mark my words! ????

What did you hate so much about the film?

Three Billboards was fine to me and Frances McDormand is excellent and it’s nothing like Marge from Fargo but I don’t understand the immense praise for Sam Rockwell at all. He’s dandy and all that jazz but I thought Woody Harrelson was better (and I don’t even care for him usually).

No words to describe these “nominees”. I’m fully expecting ties at the actual ceremony, but these record ties at the nominations stage are truly shameful. And the thing is that if it’s between this group and the obnoxious uptight critics groups, I’ll choose this group to be a part of. But these “nominations” makes it hard to defend them.

Do the tastes of the BFCA just happen to line up with Oscar predictions or do they really treat their nominations as predictions? Here are the average scores that members gave films over the last year (genre categories ignored):

    1. Three Billboards (93): nominated across the board
    2. Baby Driver (92): Craft
    3. The Shape of Water (91): nominated across the board
    3. The Post (91): nominated across the board
    3. Lady Bird (91): nominated across the board
    6. Dunkirk (90): nominated across the board
    6. Get Out (90): nominated across the board

    6. Wonder Woman (90): Craft
    6. The Square (90): zero nominations
    6. The Breadwinner (90): zero nominations
    11. Call Me by Your Name (89): nominated across the board
    11. I, Tonya (89): Acting/Craft
    11. Coco (89): Craft
    11. Wind River (89): zero nominations
    15. Darkest Hour (88): Picture/Acting/Craft
    15. The Florida Project (88): Picture/Acting

    15. Mudbound (88): Acting/Craft
    15. The Disaster Artist (88): Screenplay/Acting
    15. A Fantastic Woman (88): zero nominations
    15. Victoria & Abdul (88): zero nominations
    15. I, Daniel Blake (88): zero nominations
    22. Logan (87): Acting
    22. Blade Runner 2049 (87): Craft
    22. Spider-Man: Homecoming (87): zero nominations
    25. The Big Sick (86): Picture/Screenplay/Acting
    25: Detroit (86): zero nominations

Their second-best-reviewed movie of the year was not among the best produced, directed or written of the year.

The shutouts for Detroit and All The Money In The World (maybe it hasn’t had time to screen yet?) sadden me, and I guess mother! couldn’t even get acknowledgment with this body that loves those actors. I’m very happy that Downsizing got Hong Chau in, as most of the acting races seem to have multiple acting nominees per project. Dunkirk somehow managing an acting ensemble nomination, even though none of its individual actors were nominated. And I expected more for Phantom Thread, but that might also be one with a slow build to Oscar time.

Is there a list contenders who missed here but went on to get an Oscar nomination?
