I think they should definitely go to Venice. After all Once Upon a Time in Hollywood went to Cannes and Tarantino is a big of a movie star director you can get, so the movie will have still been successful without a Cannes premiere but it had a premiere anyway.

Yeah, I agree. I would like to see the La La Land rollout for Babylon (Venice, TIFF). Festivals are a huge part of award season and it would build great expectations for the film since it’s releasing in December. It could keep all the hype alive until then. Also, I think Babylon is Paramount’s big chance this season so they should go all in.

I’ll be disappointed if it doesn’t get a fall festival run. I really hope it debuts at Venice and screens at other film festivals like TIFF and BFI. I wonder when an official trailer will drop (maybe July?).

Jean briefly talked about the film and her character in a new interview with The Guardian:

In Babylon, directed by La La Land’s Damien Chazelle, she plays a British film critic in the golden age of Hollywood. Smart has never done an English accent on screen, but going by her Winslet impression during this call, she has it nailed. The film – which also stars Brad Pitt as 1920s heartthrob John Gilbert, Margot Robbie as Clara Bow and Tobey Maguire as Charlie Chaplin – seems like Oscar-bait. It wouldn’t be surprising if it provides Smart with something new to go on her already crowded awards shelf.

Promisingly, Smart says playing this critic won’t be a complete departure from Deborah. “She knows she intimidates people – that people are a little afraid of her because they know she has the power to make or break a career. There’s an interesting twist in a big scene I have with Brad – you see a side of her you haven’t seen.”

From what I heard/ saw myself I think Margot is the obvious frontrunner: already 2 times nominee, respected within the industry and has a pretty big fan base, the role is great and has a couple of really good scenes she can show her range with and most important it’s another Chazalle’s movie about Hollywood.

It’ll be hard to bet against Chazelle and Robbie this season.

Maybe it could be one stan but it’s not the first person to say that she is great in the film and she has chance to win after attending a test screening.

I need SOMETHING. A first look wouldn’t harm anyone? A trailer? Literally anything??? Or are they just waiting for the announcement of the Venice line-up? ugh.
