Watching this movie again and not only was Debbie a revelation I also thought Lynn Whitfield was brilliant. What was the competition this year. Should Debbie have been nominated?
ReplyJanuary 16, 2022 at 8:02 am #1204731645It would have been nice but she wasn’t getting in without heavier promotion; that was the year of Kim Basinger, Gloria Stuart, Minnie Driver, Joan Cusack, and Julianne Moore. The first three were in Best pic nominees and the last two were in movies too broadly liked…

The actual award was between Basinger and Stuart, with both being the main acting chances of their films, the top contenders for best picture. Moore and Cusack were likely the critics picks, as they both won a few throughout the season and received raves. Driver was the new actress in one of the major surprises of the award season, she is likely the coattail nominee, although she did get SAG over Cusack. Sigourney Weaver was probably the actress who barely missed, as she won the BAFTA and was nominated at the Globes, although her film underperformed. Alison Elliott, in The Wings of the Dove, also received recognition at SAG, although her performance was more quiet, and she surprisingly was snubbed at BAFTA.
My list
1. Moore
2. Morgan
3. Weaver
4. Cusack
5. ElliottOverall, it was a strong year for nominees and I liked, or loved most of the performances in contention that year.

Watching the movie back it looks like a performance to me the Academy would eat up although Morgan isn’t a huge name. I wish the movie would’ve been more visible. It is extremely enjoyable and the performances are top notch!

It probably also limited Morgan’s time to schmooze as she would have been in production on the soap at the time.

Debbi Morgan definitely should have been nominated and I would have easily replaced Kim Basinger with Debbi Morgan.
Kim Basinger L.A. Confidential – WINNER

Joan Cusack In & Out
Minnie Driver Good Will Hunting
Julianne Moore Boogie Nights
Gloria Stuart TitanicJanuary 16, 2022 at 10:35 am #1204731969Debbi Morgan definitely should have been nominated and I would have easily replaced Kim Basinger with Debbi Morgan.

Gloria Stuart TitanicWow this was an incredible year! But yes having seen all those I still Would’ve nominated Morgan!
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2022 at 11:10 am #1204732022Debbi Morgan was totally robbed for EVE’S BAYOU. She was easily worthy to replace Basinger, Driver, and Stuart in the lineup and was worthy to also take the Oscar.
I also really liked the film and had it on my top 10 for that year.
At the time, I believe Ebert actually called it the best film of 1997.

January 16, 2022 at 11:58 am #1204732083Morgan should have made it in and should have competed for the win. But back then it was especially difficult for black actors to get nominated for small “black movies” without much of a white following. Morgan was also primarily known for being a daytime soap star. That certainly didn’t help.
When you look at the nominees and Morgan, Basinger’s win is kinda dumbfounding. But it was more of a consolation prize for none of LA Confidential’s principal male actors getting nominated and for it being apparent that Titanic or As Good As It Gets was gonna win BP.
