May 23, 2021 at 3:17 am #1204267178I think Piper Laurie was a favorite or at least she thought she was. Straight’s win was incredible. That year was incredible for BSA.
ReplyCopy URLMay 23, 2021 at 6:00 am #1204267245Foster & Laurie were incredible and deserving, but I doubt the academy as a whole really thought they had much of an option outside of Straight. Foster plays a teen prostitute and Laurie was in a horror film. Some members would have likely found those turn offs to send home with Oscars. Alexander was good but brief as well (If I remember correctly and not nearly as dramatic as Straight). Grant had just won the year before.

2. Foster
3. Straight
4. Alexander
5. GrantBeatrice did THAT in Network. She deserved her win. But my vote would’ve been for Piper Laurie. Her performance in Carrie is terrifying & iconic.

ReplyCopy URLMay 23, 2021 at 4:48 pm #1204268006I read in an Oscars book that it was a shocker since it was perceived that Laurie and Foster were the frontrunners.

who do you think the 1 and 2?
ReplyCopy URLMay 24, 2021 at 6:19 am #1204268647Laurie was considered the frontrunner that year. She had a comeback narrative – it was her first film role after 1961’s The Hustler – and also the fact that Spacek got nominated as well (which was a lowkey surprise nomination) made people believe that the film was enough strong with the Academy despite the horror bias. Add to all of that the fact Ruth Gordon won the same award less than a decade before for playing a lowkey similar role (both villains) in a horror film.

May 24, 2021 at 11:52 am #1204269244As I recall, Jodie Foster was the “expected” winner with Laurie behind her. Straight, though very deserving, wasn’t really considered a threat.

She’d have won easily in Supporting.)
I think she insisted. And was so very annoyed when nominated again but in supporting only to lose to a previous two-time Best Actress winner.

I don’t have a strong feel for that race. I hate Taxi Driver and Carrie.
ReplyCopy URLMay 25, 2021 at 7:41 am #1204270532Talia Shire was beyond lucky when she got nominated for GODFATHER PART II. Diane Keaton should’ve gotten that nomination over her.
I do think she would’ve easily won for ROCKY in Supporting but I still think Foster and Laurie would’ve been more worthy than her.
Straight winning is one of the most baffling choices but she does do well in her brief screen time and it was obvious that the film was far more loved by voters than CARRIE and even TAXI DRIVER.
Speaking of short performances, I wish Marlene Warfield had gotten traction for NETWORK.
