Straight winning is one of the most baffling choices

She makes substantial impact in her one scene. Unlike a lot of women who are nominated for crying this felt deeper than the surface pity these moments are meant to conjure. Also, Network is simply a movie where the bulk of the ensemble is nod worthy and winning shouldn’t seem peculiar.

I did mean to add that she does stand out as a very sympathetic character in a movie that is otherwise filled with people that are somewhat immoral.

Beatrice Straight in Network would have been my vote.

This aspect of Straight’s performance has been previously mentioned as an element aiding in her win. Also Straight benefited from the overall tide of goodwill for Network.

1976 was such a great year for cinema.

Jodie Foster should have won but her role was way too controversial and dark. Remember, this was in the 70s. Even today, that performance may scare off a bunch of voters.

Piper Laurie was nothing more than a caricature, albeit a very entertaining one. While Sissy Spacek kept it real and grounded throughout Carrie, even with blood spattering all over her face and dress, Laurie acted like she was in a completely different film altogether. You don’t have to be loud and over-the-Top to be terrifying. She could have learned a thing or two from Louise Fletcher.

Beatrice Straight would have been my second choice. But Jodie Foster’s performance was way ahead of its time.
