I thought this was the guild who eats and drinks and eats some more. And drinks until the wee hours of the night, so glad to hear they have a timeline.

Debut feature is a tough one to predict. I am predicting Gyllenhaal right now but at the same time these are the same people who went with Bo Burnham over Bradley Cooper and Darius Marder over Regina King. They don’t seem to be reactive towards A listers in directorial debuts. Then again The Lost Daughter is more of a guild friendly directorial achievement than both A Star is Born and One Night in Miami were and unlike the latter is auteur driven. Hall suffers from the same issue Gyllenhaal does but she’s not as big a star and I feel like there’s a narrative that has developed about Passing being paid dust this awards season so I wonder if she could pull a Burnham here. Michael Sarnoski or Emma Seligman winning also feels quite tempting a prediction because of how arthouse films tend to dominate this category and also because there seems to be a passionate support base behind Pig and Shiva Baby. Especially the latter.

Now watch Tatiana Huezo win out of nowhere lol.

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I second this. This category is way less obvious than people are suggesting. Lin’s direction is showier than Gyllenhaal’s, but come on, it’s Lin Manuel Miranda. Why is he even here in a category that’s supposed to give opportunities to people who just got here ? I think Sarnovski and Hall have a chance.

Gyllenhaal and LMM would make good winners but Hall deserves.

Do you mean two women in a male oriented field ?

What even is this comparison ? Gyllenhaal and Hall have not swept the Tony’s, won Grammys and Emmys. The dude also worked on four movies this year. He has plenty of opportunities.

Rebecca Hall should definitely win First Feature. If there’s any justice, she will.

It would be so inspiring to see Campion and one of the women in First Feature winning the same night. DGA, please, make it happen.

Because you see so many Latinx people in this field? Or people making it this far without the kind of industry connections those two have? Hall’s father was literally one of the most influential names in British theatre and tv, who also gave her first onscreen role at age 10. Even her stage debut was in her own father’s production. Gyllenhaal was getting Globe noms years before LMM’s first theatre work even opened and I don’t even need to mention her family.

Worked on 4 films? Like Hall you mean?
Lmfao at painting either of them as artists who’ve struggled for opportunities. At least have some consistency 💀
