There’s a thread for actors, why not directors? Which un-nominated director will get their first nominations this decade? They can be un-nominated veterans, young promising rising new talent, un-nominated international auteurs or even actors who have started directing.

    My predictions:

    Ari Aster
    Jacques Audiard
    Sean Baker
    Julia Ducournau
    Ava DuVernay
    Robert Eggers
    Asghar Farhadi
    Maggie Gyllenhaal
    Mia Hansen-Løve
    Rian Johnson
    Regina King
    Hirokazu Kore-eda
    Park Chan-wook
    Cooper Raiff
    Kelly Reichert
    Dee Rees
    Joachim Trier
    Taika Waititi
    Wong Kar-wai
    Edgar Wright

    Any others?

I don’t see the point in listing every major director without a nomination, though. They’re not going to get fresh faces every time.

In any case, I think Kore-eda, Reichert, Waititi and Wong are the most likely of that list. But it’s also possible that, like, Aaron Sorkin or whoever gets one before any of them.

Cary Joji Fukunaga should happen soon enough, especially now that he’s proved he can handle a big-budget with No Time to Die.

Fukunaga is very difficult to work with (for studios)

They’re not going to get fresh faces every time.

There’s been a “fresh” director nominee every year since 1951.

Just throwing that stat out there.

People said similar things about the Best Actor lineup and look what happened this year

Stats are meant to be broken, obviously, but it’d be virtually impossible for the rest of the 2020’s to include 0 newcomers in categories like Acting or Director

The stat doesn’t GUARANTEE that there will be a fresh face, but it’s incredibly likely that the trend will continue through the 2020’s.

Any single year might break the streak, sure, but we’re talking about the whole decade here. If 2023 happens to break the streak, for instance, it could still pick back up in 2024.

It’s inevitable, so what’s the harm in brainstorming who it might be?
