A very sharp and funny animated adventure with a lot of wit but heavy political undertones that couldn’t be more relevant now. Ginnifer Goodwin is excellent as the lead bunny cop give the character spunk but great determination and enthusiasm. Jason Bateman is perfectly cast as the sarcastic fox, Idris Elba is great as the police detective, JK Simmons is wonderful as the Mayor, Jenny Slate is great as the Assistant Mayor, Octavia Spencer is great in a smaller part, but the stand outs were Nate Torrence as the secretary of the city hall and Maurice LaMarche as a godfather type gangster that does a spot on Brando impersonation. The writing is really fun mixing great jokes on adulthood like a wonderful scene at the DMV run by sloths but it also ties in heavy topics like sexism in the workplace and racism. I love all the subsections of Zootopia and would love to see either a TV show or spin offs about those different sections. The animation is great as is the art direction and a design already tailor made for a section in Animal Kingdom at Disney World. This is a pure delight of a movie that is probably the lightest of the non musical Disney movies in the past few years in terms of dark topics as no one dies in this so worried parents don’t have to deal with a therapy session in the car after. Definitely go see this and stay for a wonderful performance from Shakira as a Gazelle dancing tiger back up singers. 4 1/2 stars

Amazing screenplay (should have been nominated for that, it would be first for non-Pixar animation), funny and poignant. I also adore how clever this mystery was – this investigation was the most amazing part of the story, especially due to various animals met throughout.
“The Godfather” and “Breaking Bad” references were on the nose, yet hard not to love.
Can’t wait to see it again. “Try Everything” doesn’t do much for me per se but it works very well in the context of the movie.
ReplyCopy URLApril 1, 2016 at 5:09 pm #661514I saw Zootopia the other night and was surprised by how much I loved it. I went in thinking the critics and fans were exaggerating the racial profiling aspect as well as other connections to real life issues but the film was pretty spot on.
I also thought the screenplay was great and definitely deserves consideration come awards season (although that will never happen).
As much as I loved the film I still think that there is a huge chance it ends up being snubbed. The other studio animated films are going to overshadow it, especially the other Disney film of the year Moana.

Shrek was nominated for Adapted Screenplay.
[/quote]I didn’t specify that I thought about Original Screenplay. My bad.
ReplyCopy URLApril 6, 2016 at 5:55 am #662304If this was the exact same movie, but released by Pixar, and released in November, this would be a Best Picture nominee. Given its current status and release date, I wouldn’t be surprised if it received no nominations despite how unfortunate that would be. Regardless, I really enjoyed the film, it was definitely well balanced between humour for adult and children, and like everyone, loved the way they handled the race issue.

ReplyCopy URLApril 9, 2016 at 6:03 am #662844Let’s all remember that The Croods of all thing was remembered after a March release. Zootopia is going to be ok
It also depends on how good a year it is. I agree that Zootopia will probably be remembered, but I always have to think of the Lego movie, which is possibly the surest I’ve ever been about a nominee when it missed.
