So I’m confused. Should Felicity Huffman not have accepted her TransAmerica role either?

I think you’re missing the bigger point that is trans actors only ever being offered trans roles while cis actors get to play everyone including trans people, so it comes off as offensive when there actually is a trans part available but it is still given to a cis performer. I’m sure that makes sense. Let everyone be able to play any kind of role. Until that day arrives, at least the bare minimum and lowest bar should be passed by allowing transgender talent to play transgender people. Ideally, trans people should be allowed to play cis people and vice versa. Sadly, we live in a world where cis people play pretty much everyone and trans people rarely make an appearance in any major Hollywood movies. TV is slowly getting better about being trans-inclusive, but the key word is slowly.

Also, that was 2005 and this is 2018.

Times change and what is culturally acceptable inevitably changes with them. Jared Leto said that if he were offered the role that won him an Oscar in Dallas Buyers Club today he would not take it, and I believe him. I also believe Tambor (in spite of what an asshole he is personally) when he said in his 2nd Emmy speech that he would not mind if he were the last cis actor to play a trans role. ScarJo needs to get with the times. Good for her dropping out. Too bad it took all the backlash in order for her to do so rather than her own conscience, going off of her lousy lazy defense of having taken the part in the first place.

    My point exactly.
