Do You Think Talia Shire Would’ve Won If She Goes Supporting For Rocky?

Talia Shire’s screentime in Rocky is only 26 minutes. Do you think her placement in lead is right? Or just pure category fraud?

Many people says that she would’ve won so easily if she goes supporting.

That year winner for best actress was Faye Dunaway for Mommie Dearest Network, and best supporting actress was Beatrice Straight in the same movie.

You can see the exhaustion and disappointment in her face after Dunaway’s name announced 😂

I think it’s possible Talia Shire could’ve won had she been placed in supporting. Although it would’ve been weird if the one acting award Rocky ended up winning was for Adrian. As for whether or not I consider her lead or supporting, I can see both sides of the argument. Though what I think can’t be denied is that she is the female lead of that movie.

I think Talia Shire would have won had she been in the Supporting Actress category. The nominees would have been Shire, Laurie, Foster, Straight & one of Grant or Alexander. There was no way Shire would beat Dunaway or Ullmann in the Lead Actress category.

I think Beatrice was winning. The category had Foster and Piper. If they couldn’t win, no one else was winning.

But, Rocky was a favorite of the night so, maybe she had a better chance.

Shire would have easily won in the supporting category. Foster and Piper both were unconventional for the Academy and were both weak front runners. Piper had the showy role but she suffered from major genre bias. Foster was playing a child prostitute and that win would have raised a few eyebrows at that time.

Shire would have been the more traditional choice of the supportive girlfriend role in the best picture winner. She would have likely swept a few more critics prizes and would have easily defeated the divided field. Unfortunately she decided to go the best actress route and never going to beat Dunaway. Shire’s role is borderline and I think it was her choice where to be placed. I personally think she made the wrong decision because a win in supporting would have still be substantial.

Straight is a worthy winner and I’m glad such a small role was recognized in this category. Her scenes with Holden were emotional and raw. Holden is actually my favorite performance from that film and I think he’s greatly overlooked in favor of Finch and Dunaway.

She would’ve won. I think Straight, as good as she is, was an alternative to the other four who they clearly didn’t want to reward. So, Shire coming in with the BP favorite, her name, a previous nod just two years earlier and the chance to give more wins to Rocky than just three? I think she would’ve been sweapt and it was still a good performance and would’ve been an understandable win.
