Ever since the announcement that the BAFTAs are adding a sixth slot to their acting categories, I’ve been wondering maybe it would be a good idea for the Oscars as well, that way more deserving nominees have a shot. I would personally have seven slots most categories outside Best Picture. Six or seven just seems like an ideal number to me. What are your thoughts?

I honestly feel like five is the perfect number. Six or seven feels a bit too much especially for an acting or directing category. I feel like it kinda takes away the prestige of being a nominee especially if there are 6-7 different people nominated as well. I know we all hate seeing deserving performances getting snubbed, but adding more slots just so we can avoid that is just overkill.

How do you feel about the BAFTAs doing this, and particularly their reasoning?

BAFTA doesn’t want to change its policy of allowing multiple nods in a single category for actors. They mimic the Academy so often in their decision making I wonder why they haven’t strayed from their current stance. 6 while wonderful during abundant seasons — will become a chore when shit is weak to voters and critics.

The Academy has too long a history and tradition for huge changes like this to feel anything but disruptive. Yes they expanded Best Picture but that’s just the one category, and the most important one. Besides, that was harking back to the early days of the Oscars when there was a longer list of Best Picture nominees, so there was historical justification for it.

5 nominees are more than enough.

Maybe if the Academy actually picked the best performances of the year I’d be okay with going up to 6, but they don’t. An extra spot would just allow them to nominate more of the same and no real change would happen.

You’ve said it all. Increasing the slots will surely take away the prestige in nominations. We already have CC, GG, etc for the extra slots

I STAN Lady Gaga and Roddy Ricch
