It looks like all 4 acting awards are pretty much locked up for big night. However, surprises do happen (last year when Olivia Colman beat out Glenn Close comes to mind, although both had Globe wins). Do you think we will see anything surprising come Oscar night? and if yes, who do you think has the best chance at an upset?
ReplyJanuary 27, 2020 at 10:15 am #1203314594Joaquin, Renée, and Brad all seem locked and loaded.
For all her trophies this awards season, I still wouldn’t be 100% confident about Laura Dern.
Maybe Scarlett Johansson for Jojo has a squeak of a chance to upset?

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 27, 2020 at 10:27 am #1203314614She doesn’t seem to have a prayer but the fact that someone could watch Florence Pugh in LITTLE WOMEN and then Laura Dern in MARRIAGE STORY and say the latter is worthy of an Oscar is baffling.
However, I still feel like Dern is a lock. I do think she isn’t a sure-thing at BAFTA but even if she does lose there, I would still predict her at the Oscars.
Phoenix and Pitt are locked down too.
I almost feel like Zellweger would be the most vulnerable, but I am not even sure who would overtake her at this point.

Phoenix and Pitt are 100% locked. Zellweger and Dern are locked unless they’re upset at BAFTA (maybe ScarJo?).

Face It! There’s no upset whatsoever!

Feb. 2 – BAFTA Awards
Feb. 4 – Oscars: Final Voting Closes
With this tight schedule I don’t think Bafta will make any difference.

Philip K Dick Blade RunnerJanuary 27, 2020 at 1:09 pm #1203314962Yeah feels like a repeat of 2018 where it was just an easy run-up to the awards. Especially with such a limited time between voting open and close. I think the most vulnerable is Renee given her film isn’t up for much else, none of the big categories anyways but her narrative is so strong I have a hard time seeing her lose it.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 27, 2020 at 3:56 pm #1203315336I honestly think Renee has the least competition, given her performance. Driver & Banderas are tough, but Joaquin won’t lose. Pesci/Pacino are amazing too. Pugh & Bates are very good also.
