I want to raise the question and get thoughts from all the Oscarologists in this forum.
I know the Best Actress race is packed to the brim this year, but with all the late-in-game rave reviews for both Hidden Figures and Henson’s performance, is there any way you guys think she could have even the smallest shot at being nominated? She missed both the Globe and SAG noms, which are obviously huge indicators, and thus very telling of the odds. Has an actress ever made it into the lead race without nods from BOTH organizations?
What are your thoughts?
ReplyDecember 30, 2016 at 12:30 pm #1201977500I hope so. If Amy Adams, who I love, has a shot for the win for Arrival than Taraji deserves a nomination. She is worthy and her big scene is incredible
Janelle should be nominated too

Quvenzhane Wallis didn’t get a Globe or a SAG nomination if I’m not mistaken. I’d choose Portman, Huppert, Adams, Streep, and Henson if it was my choice anyway.

Wallis was indeed snubbed by the HFPA. They don’t nominate kids the way the Screen Actors Guild does. But she was not eligible for the SAG Award as wasn’t the film itself because of the lack of contracts or something like that. And in Henson’s case the SAG snub really matters because her film was nominated in ensemble and another cast member made it into supporting but she was snubbed for somebody like Emily Blunt.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 30, 2016 at 12:58 pm #1201977521The Girl on the Train was sent in early and SAG usually responds to early birds. It’s how they still remembered FFJ other than the Streep factor. Blunt also made it in over Bening, Negga, and Huppert and one of them could make top five (most likely Huppert). I just don’t know who Taraji would bump off.

Mark Ruffalo last year, though. He was snubbed for the sake of a kid, and two other actors from small non Oscar contender movies despite his movie being popular enough to win the top award.
Anyway, Taraji’s role isn’t meaty enough to garner strong amount of passion in BActress category. Her odds are low(she’s 8th) but she fits the mold of a surprise nominee because of her film’s success. It’ll all come down to which screeners they choose to watch at their Christmas break.

Yea you should definitely see it. She is very natural and I believed all her choices. And I believed her as a mathematician She has such a warm presence too
ReplyCopy URLDecember 30, 2016 at 3:55 pm #1201977571A very long one. Too many names to jump over. If she hits BAFTA, that would help but I would still place her behind Huppert. And she has to actually hit BAFTA for that to happen.

Amy Adams benefits for being the lead in an overhyped, convoluted film. The most annoying thing is when people look for something in a performance that isn’t there, and people are doing this with Amy Adams. She is a good actress, but I didn’t believe her at all in the role.
Heck, Kristen Dunst was more memorable than Amy Adams and she was all of ten minutes in Hidden Figures.
I was impressed with Taraji because I didn’t see any “Cookie” in the character, which I was afraid of. A very natural and toned down performance.

LOL You’re not the first person to say this, but why do people go into Hidden Figures afraid of seeing Cookie??? Cookie is a character and Taraji is a TRAINED actress. The closest film that Taraji did that’s “Cookie” like is Baby Boy. So not sure why people are surprised when they see her outside of Empire. I guess it’s a testament to how well she is at Cookie though…people think it’s really her.
Her resume is pretty versatile and speaks for itself. She was an Emmy and Oscar nominated actress before Empire. I don’t think anyone has gone into a Viola movie afraid of seeing Annalise- Interesting.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 30, 2016 at 6:50 pm #1201977634Taraji didn’t really become beloved until Empire so that’s why. Viola Davis had Doubt and The Help before Annalise Keating came into the picture even though she has the same type of acting that excels.

Because some people get lazy and rely on certain shticks (and even in some of her interviews she has played up Cookie). To be honest, season 2 of Empire I found Taraji to be a bit insufferable, but the writing/wardrobe did her no favours. Thankfully in season 3 (just caught up) they started to tone down the character, and Taraji is once again an A-level performer.
