Brad Pitt and Scarlett Johansson may be rewarded twice this year:

Brad Pitt – supporting in Hollywood
Brad Pitt – lead in Ad Astra

Scarlett Johansson – supporting in JoJo Rabbit
Scarlett Johansson – lead in Marriage story

The last actor who got a double nom was Cate Blanchett in 2008:
    supporting in Im Not There
lead in Elizabeth: The Golden Age

I think that Meryl Streep was very close and maybe in 6th place for her lead role in The Hours?

Ad Astra in lead is not happening.

    For Your Consideration:

Best Picture: Weathering With You, Parasite, The Lighthouse
Best Supporting Actor: Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse
Best Animated Feature: Weathering With You, Promare
Best International Film: Weathering With You, Parasite

Pitt’s a lock in supporting, but I really struggle to see him making it into lead. It’s simply too busy.

Scarlett has a better chance, as both of her fields are really empty, but I think she’ll only land a nod for Marriage Story. She could get in for Jojo Rabbit, but I currently believe the studio will place Thomasin McKenzie into supporting, and if that happens, I think it’s over for Johansson.

I will admit, Scarlett is very much hurt by the fact that they’ve never nominated her before. I forgot to mention that I don’t think she’s gonna get two nods.

This isn’t really about this year, but do they allow double noms in the same category? I don’t think they do but I’d love to see it if it was deserved. Chastain in 2011 and Fassbender in 2015 quickly come to mind as actors who had 2 performances that deserved nominations in the same category. And if you have 2 of the top 5 performances, why not get 2 noms?

I think it helps her a lot more than hurts her.

Since more movies are coming out lately, I doubt we’ll see double nominations any time soon.

I just love movies. And awards.

They made a rule a long time ago specifically saying they can only get nominated once for each category.

I just love movies. And awards.

Supporting Actor is the most competitive acting category this year. Pitt can definitely get in for Ad Astra as well.

I don’t think so. They haven’t embraced her before, so I think they wouldn’t want to give her two nods on her first go at the Oscars.

But I think with how overdue she is they could over compensate.

Actors can only get one but other categories can have the same person nominated twice. Steven Soderbergh was nominated twice for Best Director in 2000. It is sort of a dumb rule. If you gave two of the best performances of the year you should be nominated. Golden Globes allow it but it hardly ever happens. Dennis Hopper in 1986 is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

the baftas do it more often. In fact Scarlett Johansson was nominated for best actress for both girl with a pearl earring and lost in translation and won for the latter at the baftas. Ditto on Kate winslet  for her double   nomiantions for lead for the reader and revolutionary road
