There have been 12 actors who have gotten the double nod in the same year:
Cate Blanchett, Scarlett Johansson, Al Pacino, Jamie Fox, Julianne Moore, Emma Thompson, Sigourney Weaver, Holly Hunter, Jessica Lange, Fay Bainter, Teresa Wright and Barry Fitzgerald.Have there been others that was close? Or do you have a certain actor in mind who did a fantastic job in one year? Please nominate the actor, please 🙂

January 7, 2021 at 7:08 am #1203967190Judi Dench was extremely close of achieving double nominations in 2002. She was nominated in lead for Iris but could’ve been nominated in supporting as well for The Shipping News. She was double nominated at SAG and BAFTA.

Pacino had Godfather III when he got nominated for supporting in Dick Tracy.
Streep – Adaptation and The Hours

Although she won SAG, it would gave been a horrible attempt to get into supporting for an obvious lead performance.

Pfeiffer definitely wasn’t predicted to get nominated, especially considering Nicholson couldn’t get in for the previous movie, and unlike her, he actually made the Globes and Bafta.

January 7, 2021 at 9:37 am #1203967476Remember when Tom Hanks was a presumed double nominee in 2013? He almost made it for Captain Phillips but ended up being a complete non-factor for Saving Mr. Banks despite having a baity role on paper.

I would’ve recognized him for both. I realize most wouldn’t recognize the latter though.

WB campaigned her in Lead for Batman.

Which is a shame. With Tomei winning for a wonderful comedic performance in My Cousin Vinny, how competitive could Pfeiffer have been in supporting with that critically acclaimed role. She was the ones who got the notices in that role. The ironic thing is she could/would have taken Tomei’s spot? But yeah, Love Field was always going to be more of the Oscar bait film, although with it being released by Orion, maybe WB wasn’t sure if/when it would be released. But once Emma Thompson started cleaning up, they could have moved Pfeiffer to a supporting campaign and being competitive for a win.
