On the white savior argument, Denis and Chalamet both have made several comments and allusions to Paul ultimately being somewhat of a villain or anti-hero, so I feel confident Denis will extrapolate the anti-white savior themes that exist in the books with the second half. Really excited seeing your review, Stefina!

Interesting, I’ll try to find the comments.

White savior is BS. In the book, the Fremen were white cause back in the time  characters in books were white anyway. The Fremen were based on Arabs of Syria, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Egypt (minus Nubian south) and they are white.  Chani was described as redhead similar to Jessica in features. But anyway, based on =/= be. Fremen are not Arabs and their relgion isn’t Islam but made-up Zen-Sunni. Likewise, Bene Geserit aren’t Catholic nuns, based on them sure with sexiness thrown in but Orange-Catholic Bible is a made-up thing, not one to one comparison. So people should calm down.

Of course, DV can say whatever he wants but it was his decision to cast a mix of ethnicities as Fremen led by white Bardem and have white Chalamet fight a character played by a black actor (who was a non-descript Fremen in the book) so people started to read into it something that wasn’t there. It was also his decision to turn Fremen from cunning and manipulative rulers of the desert (who didn’t care about the hardships of Arakis cities cause those people adopted the Outsider ways) to “muh opression” so, again, don’t blame the outrage squad for finding something to be outraged about.

That said, Paul is canoncally an Anakin type rather than Luke type, a hero on a villain journey, because the book was subverting the Campbell’s Hero Journey, so that take is accurate.

That’s why I’ve put “white” in brackets. Regardless of the fact that MENA people are considered white for the American census or in the context of American society, it’s undeniable that, while not set in our contemporary world,  “Dune” is commenting on the colonization and exploitation of the natural resources by powerful rich nations on other people (the French in Algeria or the British pretty much everywhere, not only in the Middle East). The colonizers think that they’re bringing civilization when they’re in fact ruling and oppressing local cultures, thus the (white) savior trope comparison is not inappropriate in my opinion. That the tale is not black and white (I don’t think they mention Fremen living in the cities) is only testament to the richness and complexity of the material.

I can only talk about the movie that I’ve seen, because I haven’t read the books. Don’ tell me how it goes on or ends, please (even though waiting for a sequel is like putting my hand in that pain box, lol)!

Dang I was really wrong about this movie, its doing amazing in international box office. Better than even shang chi in someplaces. Part 2 is basically confirmed if the us release goes like this and also I think most people’s criticisms with this movie will go away with part 2. Cause Paul in part 2 is absolutely badass.

Wonder if they’ll do the next books too though. They got good material upto book 4 or they can do a trilogy ending with book 2. But Villeuneuve is doing the Gyllenhaal tv series next.

Do you think since the film is doing well at the international box office that it seals the deal for a best pic nod?

I can answer that. The deal has been sealed with the technical achievement. But it’s also getting stronger reviews overseas and boxoffice is really impressive so expect support from Euro Block.

I saw the film and really liked it. I think it’s probably my favorite Denis movie. The cinematography and production design were great, and I think Denis did a fantastic job with world-building. The performances were good, but I’m not sure about anyone getting in for acting. Rebecca Ferguson is the MVP, and Stellan Skarsgard was creepy as the Baron.

Does anyone know how Dune is doing in its second weekend of international release? I’ve been trying to find articles on the topic from the usual suspects like Deadline and Variety but no one is talking about it. I’m dying to know.

it’s 32 markets. It’s still impressive because it doesn’t have US, China, UK, Japan, SK, LATAM yet.
