Here’s a rotten review calling Dune “an accomplished escape into the realm of cinematic Arab appropriation”… They took what in my opinion should be considered a quibble with the movie and made it gigantic. Villeneuve clearly wanted to show how Fremen in his mind can have olive skin tone like Bardem (remember that Spain is a stone throw away from Africa and was colonized by Arabs for centuries) or black like Duncan-Brewster. Villeneuve’s only mistake was to cast people who look MENA but are not (Zendaya looks so much like a Moroccan-Italian friend of mine, lol).

For those who have read the novel, are there more Fremen characters to be cast in the future? So far the speaking roles are for Chani, Liet-Keynes and Stilgar. No spoilers please.

OH FFS. Enough with representation crap in a fantasy/sci fi movie that isn’t about real life and that did enough on that front casting-wise.

Liet-Kynes is not a Fremen. She( he in the book) is an Outworlder who married Stilgar’s bother (sister in the book) and is Chani’s mother (father in the book). He adopted the Chakobsa way of life but was actually an Imperial ecologist.

Once again, Fremen are not Arabs any more than Atreides are Greeks (they can trace their origin to Agamemnon but that was 10,000 years ago and now they live on a planet where there’s no Greece and Greeks).  Zen-Sunnism and Orange-Catholicism are not real religions either. So casting doesn’t have to reflect any of the real world because it’s not real world.

Stilgar and Chani are the only prominent Fremen going forward. There are some supporting characters here and there, mostly among Mud’dib’s fedeykin but no one on the level of these 2. Plus, second part will have the Corrinos and Feyd-Rautha so it won’t be all Fremen all the time.

BTW, original Liet-Kynes is a blond, blue eyed man and Chani is an elfin redhead like Lady Jessica (cue Paul’s Oedipus Complex).

In the movie Liet-Kynes says that she’s Fremen, maybe she means culturally but it’s not explained. In any case, it’s really petty to give a bad review to the movie because of this detail.

Just watched it. I liked it but it does suffer in parts due to being the first movie in a series. The ending feels a bit abrupt, and there’s no real payoff. But it was still extremely well made. Should be an shoo-in in all the technical categories. I don’t really see it happening in Best Picture. Best bet above the line would probably be Best Director.

If it got in for Director than it would make it in Picture Top 10. Unless you meant wins.

I don’t have tickets until tomorrow and feel I am showing an incredible amount of restraint by not watching it on HBO tonight. Can’t wait to finally see this after, what, 3 years of intense excitement? Finally.

Oof worst Villeneuve movie I’ve seen. Nowhere near LOTR level. Endless vision scenes, awful score, blueball ending, wasting most of the cast, zero character development.

Man audiences are gonna HATE this movie. And honestly I don’t even care if a 2nd part releases, biggest letdown of the year

I sadly have to agree with you on all this. Dune is a massive misfire.

Going into this blind not knowing anything about the Dune world is a very bad idea. I found it very confusing and didn’t have a clue what was going on half the time. I’ll probably see it again now that I’ve researched a bit about it.

I went in blind and I didn’t find this confusing at all. Also this is Part 1 so people complaining it’s incomplete…well that’s the point. Two more movies are supposed to follow.

Saw this a few days ago and I must say I was quite disappointed.

It’s not bad by any means, but I kept waiting for the spectacle everyone is talking about and it never came. Nothing about it is remarkable, it’s not innovative, it’s not visually interesting, I didn’t see anything that I had not seen before in other Sci-Fi films. There just isn’t anything new or exciting, the cinematography was so basic and it took ages for something to actually develop in the story.

The costumes were the highlight of the film for me, and Charlotte Rampling DEVOURED her REALLY short screentime, which is a problem for every actor, no one has enough screentime (too much people being marketed for not enough time).

I hope the next ones are more exciting, this one is just the beginning and I understand that the punch probably comes later in the story, but it did feel boring.

Dune was SO boring! Gorgeous to look at but an absolute chore to sit through. Started watching it last night and fell asleep, picked it up this morning and the result was the same. First of all, how can you make a Sci-Fi epic with an ensemble cast and none of them are interesting? You can’t make a beautiful  film and have no character development, boring storyline, and no real payoff for nearly 3 hours. I don’t see what all the fuss is about? There’s barely any action in it. I thought that’s what this was supposed to be. An action packed Sci Fi fantasy film. Thank god for HBO releasing it as I may not have made it the whole way through if I were in the theater.
