It is not that early, but it feels early because so many releases are late this year, but the big six races were over for me two weeks ago: La La Land, Damien Chazelle, Denzel Washington, Emma Stone, Liam Neeson, Viola Davis. You can take that to the bank!

Yes, Casey Affleck will win the critics’ awards, but Donald Trump’s election secured Washington. And yes, Natalie Portman will win all of the critics’ awards, but Hollywood cannot resist crowning a hot young thing like Stone. We see this kind of thing all the time (Jessica Chastain versus Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Keaton versus Eddie Redmayne). SAG and Critics’ Choice supporting actor is anyone’s game, so that will be fun, but in a field this divided, what are the chances that they even agree?

The screenplay awards are up in the air, as is animated feature, cinematography and so on, so there is still plenty of fun left.

Well, Jessica Chastain and even Michael Keaton didn’t have the reviews Natalie Portman has right now. And she’s playing one of the most famous women in history. So Emma Stone can take a seat for now and enjoy her Globe.

I envy your confidence but maybe I should remind you of three words….The Big Short.
