Ok, this year’s Best Actress race is really on fire now with Natalie Portman’s “Jackie” in the mix… I’m so torn that I think my beloved and absolutely Oscar worthy Meryl Streep may miss out… We will see…

My current predix (based on film fest screenings and buzz and reviews for the most part. I’ve only seen the contenders for Sally Field, Kate Beckinsale and of course Streep so far).

    1. Emma Stone, LaLa Land
    2. Viola Davis, Fences
    3. Ruth Negga, Loving
    4. Amy Adams, Nocturnal Animals
    5. Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins
    6. Natalie Portman, Jackie
    7. Annette Bening, 20th Century Women
    8. Emily Blunt, The Girl on the Train
    9. Rachel Weisz, Denial
    10. Amy Adams, Arrival (I may have my Adams films backwards… it doesnt seem to clear which one people think will give her the better shot)
    ~ Others in the race:
    11. Jessica Chastain, Miss Sloane (She could fly up the chart once we finally get a screening)
    12. Taraji P. Henson, Hidden Figures
    13. Marion Cotillard, Allied – but it is Supporting?
    14. Jennifer Lawrence, Passengers
    15. Sally Field, Hello My Name is Doris
    16. Kate Beckinsale, Love & Friendship
    17. Isabelle Huppert, Elle (I just don think the Academy will go for it)

If the Oscar race was decided solely on reviews Portman would be pretty much locked in to win this year. Every single one of the film’s notices dedicates time to excessively praise her performance. This is acclaim I haven’t seen for an actress since Blue Jasmine.

Now I just hope Blunt can get the same and make this a really interesting race 😀

In a category this unbelievably star-studded, I’m not convinced Negga is a shoo-in. If the critics awards don’t embrace her, I can easily picture her falling through the cracks.

OSCAR FLASHBACK: Best Original Song (2010) – Ahem, Where is Cher?

Portman benefits from her movie being entirely about her and its brief running time of 95 minutes.

Focus would be wise to category fraud her into supporting.

I really want Viola to go Supporting, which I’m hearing is a possibility. That way I can root for her.

I’ve never really convinced by her. Loving’s critical reception was vastly exaggerated due to the lack of well reviewed films in the first half of the year. She could still get in but I am sceptical.

Agreed. I will be split so many ways over who I am rooting for if she stays lead.

Not a Streep fan. But even I wanted her to win a 3rd one based on her legacy alone. I hated it was at the expense of Davis and a humiliating insult to Glenn Close. If Davis is to beat Portman and whoever else in the lineup you should be relieved.

Holy Cow. The Lead Actress category is stacked. Watch out for veteran Holly Hunter. I’d love for Viola to be nominated in Lead again. Portman reviews are incredible. She might be the Cate Blanchett of the year.

LMAO last year you all were complaining about Mara and Vikander committing fraud and now you want Viola to do the same just for her to have more chances.

A Best Actress win for Viola would be more important than going Supporting just to secure a win. Viola can still win Best Actress

It’s not fraud in the same way though. The original play only has one lead, Denzel Washington’s character, with Viola’s supporting even though it can be seen as a lead based on the fact that it’s the most major female role. It will not be similar at all to Vikander, and certainly not Mara, who were as dominant as their lead costars in their films.

Currently I am seeing 2 scenarios for Actress/ Supporting Actress:

    1. If everyone stays in the categories they are now-

    Actress
    Portman
    Davis
    Stone
    Streep
    Benning
    (alt. Negga)

    Supporting Actress
    Williams
    Harris
    Stewart
    Kidman
Anyone (currently predicting Monae based on Hidden Figures reactions but Dern, Jones, Fanning, Weisz, Linney all seem possible with the category this weak)

    2. If studios realise how weak Supporting Actress is and adjust accordingly

    Actress
    Portman
    Stone
    Streep
    Benning
    Blunt
    (alt. Adams “Arrival”)

    Supporting Actress
    Davis
    Williams
    Negga
    Adams “Nocturnal Animas”
    Harris
    (alt. Kidman)

Personally I’d love to see the second scenario so we have a competitive race in both categories.

That year was a disgrace for me. I hate that Streep performance and that stupid movie. I did not want Davis to win for that awful movie and for playing a help. The rest of the category was meh as well. I guess I would’ve probably voted for Close because she’s so overdue.

I did root for Davis when she was up against Penelope Cruz, but, looking back. I love underdogs. But I also love crazy women in Woody Allen films lol.

Davis clearly wants to go lead, and in my opinion, there’s no way she goes for anything less than that. She probably even wanted a leading nomination for Doubt.

Kidding aside – for Davis, a chance at Best Actress is more important than a chance at (or even a win for) Best Supporting Actress.
