Just watched Dreamgirls for the 100th time. Ok maybe like the 7th time. But I’m reminded how great Eddie Murphy is in this movie. Oscar nominee and all.
I always enjoy his comedies (bad or good. He never disappoints…A Thousand Words he acted with his face like a modern day silent film star plus opposite a tree) But I think it’s time for Eddie to break-out his acting chops and do a funny, dramatic independent movie. He’s one of the few actors today who can transform himself. Usually it’s for laughs but just think of a good meaty role where he can have heart and still chew the scenery.
My favorite Eddie Murphy movie is still Trading Places. He had such heart, comedy, and some transformation in the movie. But I think it would be fun to see him do independent-dramedy. Perhaps a supporting role that feels lead.
I could see him play a down on his luck gambler holding on to a dream and one more shot winning the jackpot, or retired bumbling detective trying to adjust to normal life while always being drawn back into a case (modern day Nick Charles which I know is in the works w/ Johnny Depp) or even as simple business man having a mid-life crisis of some sort. Hmm…maybe I need to start working on the scripts.
