-Olivia’s next film after Wonka wraps will be Empire of Light. Sam Mendes will direct and write (his first solo writing credit).

-Searchlight is backing the film.

-Roger Deakins will be the DOP.

-It doesn’t have a release date yet, but Deadline reported it’s eyeing a fall 2022 release.

-Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Crystal Clarke and Tanya Moodie will co-star.

-From Deadline: It’s billed as a love story set in and around a beautiful old cinema on the South Coast of England in the 1980s.

I’m curious when it’ll film if they’re eying late ’22. Marvel’s six-episode Secret Invasion (to which Olivia is attached) starts filming in late January.

Sam Mendes Filmed 1917 from April to July 2019 and managed to released it at the end of the year and that was a very technical movie. I’m pretty sure he can make the eligibility for 2023 Oscars

On the side note, I’m more curious on how Searchlight would put this in their upcoming slate. They have a really stacked catalogue for 2023 awards season with films from Sam Mendes, Yorgos Lanthimos and Martin McDonagh. That still leaves out Next Goal Wins, Chevalier and the Menu.

I think this is due to start filming at the end of January according to press stories in Britain.

Is there any word on Thomas Newman’s involvement?  Surely in line for a significant Oscar campaign from Fox Searchlight with his overdue narrative?

I think some of those films will be pushed to 2023, and don’t think Next Goal Wins and The Menu are oscar films either.
