Just a bit of random trivia – I don’t recall if anyone brought it up at the time, but the La La Land-Moonlight debacle wasn’t the first time the wrong envelope was handed out to a presenter. I recently discovered this video where Sammy Davis Jr. presented the two Oscars for scoring – adaptation or treatment, and substantially original. Unfortunately the envelope for the latter award was given to him first, while he presented the former, and he actually read out the winner John Addison for Tom Jones before the look of confusion on the audience’s (and conductor’s!) faces reminded him that Tom Jones was not a nominee in that category. He then quickly received the correct envelope and announced the winner Irma la Douce. Unlike the humiliation endured by the La La Land producing team, however, on this occasion the only negative side-effect was that the remaining four nominees of the original score category discovered they’d lost a little earlier than expected. Video below.
