Every year, I have the same question: Why hasn’t there been more of a push to increase the number of nominees in other Oscar categories, especially acting and directing?
With controversy over snubs every year and the ever increasing number of films vying for a spot, it only seems like the next step to at least add a sixth slot to these categories. Do you think it will ever happen?

February 25, 2023 at 10:36 am #1205317663Why though? This isn’t Critics Choice or Emmys where everyone gets nominated for everything…
BAFTA changed to 6 nominees and jury, then changed shortlist criteria again (after backlash) and still people complain so they might as well have stuck to original 5 formula… people will complain either way when their faves miss (I’m guilty)

On the other, acting noms have always been very safe and they just might stick to the usual and we’ll probably get more frustrating biopic noms or the trends they’ve have exhausted to death since the Academy’s origins.

There might be resistance to adding nominees by more conservative attitudes as there’s always been, but I’m for whatever works to save these awards.
Start small by adding one nominee in the acting and director categories. No reason not to add to sp etc.
But, Oscar is traditionally viewed as prestige elite. So, they’re going to have to be pushed into a corner.
No idea how viewership will be this year, but populist films that keep their quality like TG:M and AWOW could help.ReplyCopy URLThe Sunne in Splendour.

Why put limitations or restrictions on the amount of nominees? I want to hear why detractors are so against it; should we not celebrate and recognize more amazing performances on a yearly basis?
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 25, 2023 at 11:03 am #1205317690I don’t understand why people think that expanding the number of nominees will improve ratings. Do you really think that more viewers would tune in if only there were more nominees?
I like keeping the number of nominees small and I think it contributes to maintaining the greater significance of winning an Oscar in comparison to winning any other entertainment award.

The Oscars are considered the most important award in the entertainment industry so when you get more nominees, the award lose value in a way. This is not like the Emmys when the quality and number of projects released is vastly superior and it made sense for them to change the rules. Some people are even against the 10 slot line-up for Picture.
Films are different because not every year is filled with amazing films/performances getting buzz, most years we get an obvious top 6 and then we kill ourselves trying to chose the top 5. Imagine 2021 for example, that year was dry as hell to even get 5 nods in each acting category. Also, having more nominees doesn’t guarantee that we’ll get deserving nominees, especially knowing how the industry works.
If they ever changed it, 6 nominees tops. No more than that.

February 25, 2023 at 11:19 am #1205317710My general rule of thumb for awards is the top award should have 1.5-2x the number of nominees as the categorical awards. With BP having ten (and DEFINITELY not expanding preferably), other categories should have 5 or 6. No more. No less.

Not sure. But I hear that argument a lot. “It’s not the People’s Choice” they say. Of course it isn’t. But no ratings, no show. It’s worth a try.

In my mind, it was to expand it to, a maximum of 7 nominees.
Because I was just gonna say; what is the actual difference between five and six nominees? Especially when we have 10 Best Picture nominees.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 25, 2023 at 4:36 pm #1205317879I would expand the Best Animated Feature category to 6 slots, then do something similar to the Annies in that half the nominees are mainstream American movies, and the other half are foreign and indie films. In the end only one of the six would win though, but it would ensure more artistic representation.
