What actors gave your favorite breakthrough performances of 2016 and why?
One of the obvious ones is probably Mahershala Ali in “Moonlight.” He’s been working for a while but that performance obviously has put him on the map in a big way. But I think I’d put most of his co-stars right up there with him: Janelle Monae, Naomie Harris, Trevante Rhodes, Alex R. Hibbert, and my personal favorite performance from the film, Ashton Sanders.
Slightly less obvious, I thought Parker Sawyers nailed the unenviable challenge of playing President Obama as a young man, and doing so credibly and without it feeling like a labored impression.
I also loved Ruth Negga (“Loving”), Sandra Huller (“Toni Erdmann”), Jovan Adepo (“Fences”), and a bunch more.

Not a breakthrough performance at all. Do yourself a favor and go watch her previous works. She’s consistently fantastic and has been recognized quite often as such by the European film community and criticism.
I just saw American Honey. Sasha Lane is really impressive.

December 28, 2016 at 4:24 am #1201976108I hope all the praise for Ashton Sanders I see on these fourms translate to a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Gold Derby Film Awards!

December 31, 2016 at 8:24 am #1201977805And while I do love Ashton Sanders and Lucas Hedges, one who has not been singled out by anybody is Blake Jenner.
Everybody Wants Some and Edge of Seventeen gave him great range, and he should be celebrating a Golden Globe nod right now. Hope he continues to get the chance to shine.
