From Deadline: We can reveal that Oscar nominee Adam Driver, Oscar winner Penélope Cruz and Emmy nominee Shailene Woodley are newly aboard for the big-budget biopic of racing mogul Enzo Ferrari.
Star Wars and House Of Gucci actor Driver is replacing Hugh Jackman in the title role while Parallel Mothers star Cruz will play Enzo’s wife Laura. Big Little Lies star Woodley will play mistress Lina Lardi. I wonder why Hugh dropped out?
-Shooting starts this May in Italy in Modena and Emilia-Romagna. Statement from Mann: “Being able to have these wonderfully talented artists, actors Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley, bring to life these unique characters on location in Modena and the Emilia-Romagna is a vision fulfilled.”
From Deadline: The movie, which Mann has been working on for two decades, is set during the summer of 1957. Ex-racecar driver, Ferrari, is in crisis. Bankruptcy stalks the company he and his wife, Laura, built from nothing ten years earlier. Their tempestuous marriage struggles with the mourning for one son and the acknowledgement of another. He decides to counter his losses by rolling the dice on one race – 1,000 miles across Italy, the iconic Mille Miglia.
-The script was written by Troy Kennedy Martin (The Italian Job) and Mann also based it on Brock Yates’ book Enzo Ferrari-The Man and the Machine.
Thoughts? I’ve seen complaints from some Driver fans about him doing another Oscar baity project or another biopic set in Italy.

February 10, 2022 at 12:43 am #1204793734More info on the script from THR:
Mann will direct from a script he co-wrote with Troy Kennedy Martin (The Italian Job).
The project adapts Brock Yates’ 1991 book Enzo Ferrari: The Man, The Cars, The Races, The Machine, which details the rise of the auto mogul.
I wonder why Jackman dropped out. It wasn’t that long ago that he had signed on for it (June 2020) and I don’t think he’s doing another project now. I’m a Driver fan but I’m not looking forward to hearing him do an Italian accent again.

This is the only part that worries me. His scripts aren’t great. Only good one was The Sweeney in my opinion.

They cast a 38 year old actor.

ReplyCopy URLFebruary 10, 2022 at 9:02 am #1204794562Odd choice for Driver to take imo off the heels of the reception to House of Gucci. It’s not like he was particularly praised for that and I thought he’d be taking more interesting projects like White Noise than this, he seems very miscast here.

I saw a comment on social media about how Driver seemed to prioritize checking off working with famous directors over anything else in a film. I think he’s a great actor but his casting is odd. IMO, he was miscast in HoG and it’s obvious Ridley cast him in it because they enjoyed working together on The Last Duel.

The material in Gucci is lackluster if we’re going to be honest.

Yeah, the script is terrible and I was always skeptical of the film’s reception because the screenwriter-Roberto Bentivegna-is a first-timer.

I like Adam but he is so miscast for this movie. He’s too young and isn’t at the age the real Enzo was during the period the film takes place. It feels like he signed up for it just to check off working with another famous director.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 28, 2022 at 3:54 pm #1204824750He is too young for this and I love Michael Mann. I loved him in THE LAST DUEL. He could be perfect as The Main Villain in GLADIATOR 2. For this movie, Enzo was 59 years old so Tom Cruise or Johnny Depp or Robert Downey Jr are perfect
