Francis Ford Coppola said Marvel movies are despicable in the past. Now, FFC said Marvel movies “killed Hollywood and even Dune and James Bond are copying despicable Marvel”. He seems to imply Any Huge Budget is copying Marvel. That’s false. Just as an example: Ridley Scott didn’t copy Marvel and he directed 3 Huge Budget Movies. Same with Zack Snyder and his Dark and Depressing Style

I agree that Art Is Subjective

Financially, Marvel stans won — why are they still whining whenever actual film artists like Coppola or Scorsese decry what they’ve done to the industry they’ve grown up with and found past success in?

I’m lowkey conflicted with this. Up before the pandemic hit, original works did decently at the box office while Marvel flick is marvel flick, they’ve been here since X-Men and Raimi’s Spider-Man movies hit the theatres. Despite marvel flicks being here and there, some original works are still managed to did bonkers at the box office like Inception, Gone Girl, Baby Driver, WoWS etc. Pandemic hit, original movies flopping because the hype isn’t enough for these while NWH did Bonkers at BO. Watch Batman pulls the same thing yet won’t get any flak out of it
And Marvel isn’t the only culprit here. I do think franchises like Fast and Furious, Jurassic films, Monsterverse, Mission Impossible, DC Films and even 007 Franchise also need to held accountable for this yet we barely heard interviewers asking these “auteurs” like FFC, Marty, etc about other tentpoles franchise. They’re just as “guilty” as Marvel, hence why some MCU Stans are not having it.

I would argue Marvel set off the new Hollywood model of depending on previous IP and tentpole projects, if you look at the trajectory of top 10 grossers in the past 10 years or so. It’s not a brand new phenomenon, but yes certainly pandemic-inflicted moviegoing habits have made the change more stark.

Scorsese did 2 movies with Streamers. First Netflix, then APPLE. Lincoln was almost HBO. I think 99.9% of dramas and All small budget movies will be Streaming Now. Only Huge Budget Movies will be in Movie Theaters

Hollywood is now making these cheap ass biopics on musical artists. When will that get called out. I am not mad a FFC for his comments. He’s a legend. I understand that legends today now struggle to get their passion films made.

I agree. And 99.9% of Best Picture Winners are small movies. Probably only 3 Huge movies won Best Picture(Return of the King, Titanic, Gladiator
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 20, 2022 at 9:03 am #1204810779I really like Marvel stuff, but FFC isn’t wrong and he can say what he wants because he’s a legend. I get his frustration, especially as he’s planning to pour his own money into a passion film he can’t seem to otherwise get financed. I don’t agree on his comment about Dune being part of the prototype, though. I thought it successfully met an auteurist vision with a big budget and maintained originality and innovation.
But I don’t think it’s just Marvel…originality in film is dying regardless. Every other announced movie these days, even for popular and gifted directors, is biopic Oscar bait/an adaptation or remake, etc.
Anyway, stop asking famous directors about Marvel challenge. The profile these quotes come from is a wonderful, introspective piece on FFC and this is all anyone is talking about from it.

It’s because is way, way, way more difficult to get financed these days. That’s why everyone is only doing remakes and sequels. Example: Ridley Scott is doing GLADIATOR 2

Yes, and I think Marvel is symptomatic of that, not the disease itself as its often portrayed. If journalists didn’t obsessively ask questions with that framing I don’t think FFC or Scorsese or any other director would go out of their way to talk about Marvel’s impact on the industry but the industry itself.

Videogames and Series killed it more than Marvel. If you only want money and a lot of people in Hollywood only want money, you will win MORE money in Videogames and Series. Movies are dying. Even Ridley Scott is Producing Several Series for Different Streamers
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 23, 2022 at 6:51 am #1204814370Imho the problem isn’t Marvel movies, it’s the new wave of nostalgia bait meta bullshit. Straight-up awfully made films that try to win over the audience by feeding them memberberries. I agree that Marvel contributes to that (hell, No Way Home was a terrible turd that tricked people into thinking it’s good by crafting a screenplay out of memes, Reddit threads and repeated lines from actually enjoyable films) but the biggest problem is that that’s what the fans want. If fans had any standards for the stuff they’re being force-fed, we wouldn’t have such a bleak landscape of filmmaking. Kevin Feige crashed the MCU train, but he did it by listening to the fans. It’s hard to make movies that don’t alienate your audience because the audience just doesn’t want to see original content anymore.
