What? You mean to say that Nomadland “the greatest film ever” according to goldderby did NOT win Best Film?????? And the critics sure are pushing for First Cow.

Although I’m satisfied with the choices of Zhao and Flanigan, I’m kind of sad Minari didn’t get anything.

I’ll say this once and I’ll say it again. Flanigan is getting a Globe nomination.

Sometimes critics things do make it to Oscar nominations and possibly win. Many Oscar winners started out as “critics thing”.

NRSA is really a critics thing. A small film no one saw that premiered early in the year. + a lot of the critics acting nominees that actually happened at the Oscar were already known and established actresses that were acclaimed. Think (Isabelle Huppert, Charlotte Rampling etc) that Actress is really a long shot. I see her as a Martha Marcy May Marlene, Eigth Grade type of situation.

Like? Because I can’t think of any winner that wasn’t already in the conversation for major awards in recent years.

Because they usually pick better and more interesting winners than Oscar.

GD for 11/12 months of the year: “Critics awards mean nothing! X will be a critics push but they’ll get nowhere!” GD in the 1 month that circles release winners: “X IS WINNING YOUR FAVE IS DEAD BECAUSE THE BOISE FILM JOURNALISM STUDENTS ASSOCIATION SNUBBED HER” I’m going to wait till the circles finish, but I’m not forgetting how all the wins that have made critics awards “accurate” precursors in the last couple of years (i.e. the instances where the circles award an eventual nominee) have been predictable af.

    Viola Davis is a lock.

It depends on who you saw “in the conversation” as IMO, Flannigan was “in the conversation” before. In fact it was in The Best Actress thread on this forum where I first heard of Never Rarely Sometimes Never. Either way, she’s “in the conversation” now. Doesn’t mean she’ll get a nomination, but she’s not coming out of nowhere if she receives one. Just like if Eighth Grade or Martha Marcy May Marlene had somehow gotten with Oscar. You’d be saying they were “in the conversation”.
