Breakthrough Artist Riz Ahmed, SOUND OF METAL

I love Riz but how on earth is he a “breakthrough artist”?

    Lol great question!

I love Riz and he’s a phenomenal actor (haven’t seen Sound of Metal thought) but it makes no sense. He’s an Indie Spirit nominated and Emmy winning actor who has appeared in three box office franchises (one of which he was the principal antagonist in) and has been nominated for four BIFA awards for leading films.

Even the nomination for Emmy nominated and BAFTA winning Mission Impossible and Fast and Furious actress Vanessa Kirby in “breakthrough artist” is questionable although at least this is the first time she has ever appeared as the lead in a film or television programme so I guess there’s an argument to be made there?

But I mean what next? Are Claire Foy and Jodie Comer coming for their breakthrough nominations next year?

Right Vanessa’s breakthrough recognition is more plausible, due to her now appearing as a lead for the first time.

    Predictions for NSFC tomorrow?

I don’t think Nomadland will win Best Film. NSFC likes to throw a curve ball there. I’ll say First Cow or Never Rarely Sometimes Always. Or just watch them go with Small Axe.

No Margot Robbie and Frances McDormand lol.

Yeah I mean I personally find it questionable but at least she hasn’t led a film before. Riz has led many indie films, been nominated for an Indie Spirit award for Nightcrawler and he’s led an Emmy winning hit limited series before.

What do you think about Best Actress? They usually go with the LAFCA or NYFCC winner so most probably it’s between Carey and Sidney. Although for the past three years they’ve been favoring the LAFCA winner.
