Do you think Tenet can pull a Ford v Ferrari BP nom with just techs or it will be another Interstellar?
Another Interstellar, but with less nominations.
January 11, 2021 at 9:32 am #1203976347Unless Chicago 7 scores a Sound nomination or becomes the BP frontrunner, it’s probably not winning Editing.
It probably will get a Sound nomination though. Chicago 7 actually has some flashy Sound editing that will get noticed, particularly in the montage segments.
John's Best of 2020

Best Actor: Chadwick Boseman-Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Best Actress: Viola Davis-Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Best Supporting Actor: Delroy Lindo-Da Five Bloods
Best Supporting Actress: Amanda Seyfried-Mank
Best Original Screenplay: Soul
Best Adapted Screenplay: The Midnight SkyJanuary 11, 2021 at 10:42 am #1203976581If Nomadland is winning Best Picture I’d have thought it would also win Adapted Screenplay as that seems to be the key award for Best Picture winners these days (only The Artist and The Shape of Water didn’t win it) and there’s no clear alternative in that category at the moment.
I’ll admit to hating the screenplay and just sort of hoping for something else to swoop in, but you and others are right, of course. Also, for whatever reason, I guess I have been thinking of it as more of a Shape of Water than a Birdman, but maybe that’s not how most in the industry see it. Hm.

January 11, 2021 at 11:10 am #1203976702Critics been pushing I’m Thinking of Ending Things (sadly) and First Cow in adapted which even with their most campaign doesnt seem to translate more than a cute nom. Still feel like it’s Nomadland to grab alongside directing and cinematography.
About BP, Nomadland is Searchlight’s only priority and they’re good at campaigning. Netflix messed up as expected with its overcrowded picks and none of them seem BP material, tho theyre focusing on Trial 7 now cause Mank will sure fade. Sony, always terrible, is totally ruining The Father while some early critics said that had material for the big category but, unless theyre saving pennies for the televised awards, its not happening. Focus has PYW that could at most give them actress and screenplay. Neon has Ammonite which, lol. A24 is doing work better than the usual recent years but for First Cow to land with industry awards is a huge stretch and unless the Minari golden globe controversy helps its publicity, I cant see it coming thru.
So in general, no studio has any film to compete with Searchlight’s Nomadland (considerably for saving some big releases for next year). That makes the season so predictable early on, but theres always HFPA to mess things up with even more ugly choices.
January 11, 2021 at 11:15 am #1203976721-With variable attention from critics but an assured placement from Portugal, and absolutely dripping in international cinephile catnip, can Vitalina Varela actually go the distance to a nomination in International Feature?
The thing about Vitalina is the international feature comittee recently saving 2-3 spots of the december shortlist to films that could be overlooked by lack of promotion or from countries that usually don’t land nominations. I always felt the film fits that mold, considering it’d be Portugal’s first nom, and maybe grab that 5th slot in International a la Corpus Christi last year.
Maybe the critics can give it a cute push as there’s no frontrunner for that category, but still a long way to go.January 11, 2021 at 11:20 am #1203976732Song: Speak Now from One Night in Miami…
