Well, the academy really embraced Amour, another movie about the elderly, even it was a foreign film. The Father will be fine.

Really interesting that now that Pieces of a Woman has been released both Ellen and Vanessa have been getting in at almost every group.

It offers a new perspective on dementia cinema audiences haven’t seen before, and with most if not everyone knowing someone suffering with similar experiences it is going to be a hit with voters and audiences. And considering the current pandemic there is bound to be passion for it.

Eh I don’t know; I don’t really buy that because I don’t think it offers a new perspective on dementia. What does it really say about it? I’ve been living with my gma who has had dementia for years now. She is long past the stages of Hopkins’ character’s dementia. Given that, as you say, most if not everyone knows someone suffering with [dementia], what does the film say about dementia that people don’t already know?

It’s a new perspective bc it’s from the perspective of the person struggling with dementia, rather than others watching someone struggle with dementia. Obviously it’s not the first film to attempt something like that (Joker was from the perspective of a mentally ill man too), but with an actor like Hopkins in the leading role (esp since he was a great King Lear) and great writing/directing I’m sure it’ll find more nuances in its depiction of mental illness.

Interesting how since January 6th, The Trial of the Chicago 7 has seen a massive surge in support from critic groups. We’re already seeing the effects of the capitol riots and the second impeachment of Donald Trump on the Oscar race.

People keep saying this but I’m honestly missing the connection lol. Feeling like I watched a different movie.

    As usual you’re exaggerating.

This is single handedly one of the worst set of winners I’ve seen all year. I guess good taste is two words Hawaiian Critics are unfamiliar with.
