I think Ahmed may end up being the runner up to Boseman at the Oscars and not Hopkins.
Nobody seems to give two damns about Hopkins. Isn’t even Lindo in a messy movie from what feels like 600 years ago in front of him in terms of wins?

Tom Poe Award for Best LGBT Film: KajillionaireJanuary 24, 2021 at 1:02 pm #1203999296Always possible that it just does not materialize, but the critic awards have provided Anthony Hopkins enough of a foundation for him to bring it home in the televised awards. Not predicting it, but Boseman/Hopkins/Ahmed can still follow pretty much the same path as Driver/Phoenix/Sandler.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 24, 2021 at 1:02 pm #1203999299Someone posted on AW that Kansas City has a very solid track record for Film winners/Picture nominees. Only nine times has a Best Film winner missed the Picture nomination at the Oscar and in most of these cases they probably would have made an expanded lineup.
So the future looks especially bright for PYW!!

What do you mean? He’s barely won two or three.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 24, 2021 at 1:16 pm #1203999321Phoenix only won three of the awards that have been announced so far this year. His other ten wins came from the televised awards and the later critic awards, which should be kinder to Hopkins, with The Father actually being released. Hopkins has been generally nominated and he is on the board for wins. That is sufficient for there still to be potential for him.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 24, 2021 at 1:24 pm #1203999342There’s been chatter on here about The Father under-performing at the televised or not being the big contender some are predicting it to be because of its performance at critics groups but the fact it has 5 critics groups nominations for Picture thus far, 5 nominations for director, 17 for Actor and 13 for S. Actress is interesting for a film that is under-seen amongst critics.
I don’t think it’s going too dramatically under-perform with the televised awards when it will have more visibility than it already does. At most I can see it under-performing at SAG but that’s really it.

January 24, 2021 at 1:26 pm #1203999347Hopkins is not winning anything cause he’s white. It’s the year to hate white people.
But he could still win a la Eddie Redmayne and Phoenix.

If that was the case then Carey Mulligan and Frances McDormand wouldn’t be dominating the Actress category in critics wins.

I swear to God with you
I can’t wait until we get our trio of Viola, Chad and Daniel, and your head explodes.

And maybe Dominique Fishback or Youn Yuh-jung in S. Actress; that would really kill him.

Look at how well Bo Burnham and Olivia Cooke have been doing with critics groups (both are in sixth in nominations in their respective categories).
It may not necessarily be Burnham or Cooke but I think we’re getting a Marina de Tavira style nomination in one or both of the supporting categories.

January 24, 2021 at 3:10 pm #1203999498Enjoying this as much as I can because when the televised awards start it’s most probably over.
I completely agree, specially for Carey!
We all saw what happened in 2018 and 2019.
2018: Saoirse Ronan and Sally Hawkins swept critics; Frances (deservedly) went on to win.
2019: Collette got a lot of critics love (despite that low Cinemascore grade); was not nominated.

Carey definitely has a much better chance of winning Actress than Riz has of winning Actor, in my opinion.
