The Midnight Sky nominated in the feature film category but not the sci-fi/fantasy–does being nominated for the former preclude the latter?

New York Film Critics Online Awards

Best Actor: Riz Ahmed, “Sound of Metal” (Amazon Studios)

Best Supporting Actor: Leslie Odom Jr, “One Night in Miami” (Amazon Studios)

Best Supporting Actress: Ellen Burstyn, “Pieces of a Woman” (Netflix)

    Best Animated Feature: “Soul” (Pixar)

Best Use of Music: “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (Netflix) – Brandon Marsalis

Breakthrough Performer: Kingsley Ben-Adir, “One Night in Miami”

Best Ensemble Cast: “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (Netflix)

The above are all solid wins – I haven’t seen some of the other winners so I can’t provide my thoughts on the unseen films.

“Soul” is definitely winning animated feature at the Oscars and it would be worthy. I thought 80% of the film was brilliant while the other 20% had me scratching my head. But, when I wasn’t scratching, I was in love with “Soul”.

I’m also glad to see “One Night in Miami” getting recognition – I thought it was excellent all around. I hope it fares well in the nominations being announced next week – SAG and Golden Globes, I think. It should definitely be a SAG ensemble contender.

I did rewatch “The Sound of Metal” for a couple of reasons. I love the movie and I wanted to pay more attention to Paul Raci’s performance. I can see where he’s getting notices, but the key thing about my second watch was how beautifully powerful Riz Ahmed’s performance is – good to see him winning here. Best actor is tough this year. Boseman, Ahmed or Lindo are Oscar worthy.

I adore Ellen Burstyn and thought she gave the best performance in “Pieces of a Woman”. I forgot she was in “The Last Picture Show” and received an Oscar nod for the movie. Of course, Cloris Leachman, the reason I rewatched, was so worthy of Oscar here, but Burstyn was also terrific.

Speaking of the “The Last Picture Show” – brilliant how Bogdanovich captured the loneliness of small town America. A classic.
