“I didn’t like this film” does not mean it should not have been nominated for Best Picture.

What does it mean then? Why would I support the nomination of a film I dislike because it lacks quality?

What does it mean then? Why would I support the nomination of a film I dislike because it lacks quality?

What is this lacking quality you refer to? Was the acting subpar? The directing lacked flourish? The film was not entertaining? The script was not quotable or too cheesy? It didn’t share your political or social views? Your friends hated it?

Take for example Driving Miss Daisy or Braveheart or Crash, for example. There are a number of people who like those films, and obviously members of the Academy, since they voted for them. Yes, they may not be as artistic or as complex as other films released those same years, but a case can be made for why each of them is good.

To say this film does not deserve a nomination because you (one person) didn’t like something about it, is kind of presumptuous. That’s why these award ceremonies are voted on by a group of people with obviously differing opinions.

Unless, you mean something like DW Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation, which is offensive.

Darling, I understand what you are saying, but you mean that a film that you dislike can’t still be among the best films of the year? The same way that a film that you is one of your favourites might not be a good film?

I agree with Bohemiam but all in all that’s subjective, the way that you’re wording it seems like everyone agrees, which they don’t.

If you agree with something I say then why is it wrong that I say it ? Another member reaching. And if I thought everyone agreed with my opinion I wouldn´t make a thread about it where everyone is picking their own options.

Well, it’s certainly how it should play out in reality. I would hope voters are only choosing aspects (including whole films for Best Picture) they like…

I think it depends on what they dislike about a film. Maybe it has an actor or actress that you dislike: Sean Penn or Ben Affleck or Lady Gaga. Maybe you found the film a little dull in parts ie Roma. Maybe you don’t agree with its tone, ie Green Book. Does that make that film not worthy of a Best Picture nomination?

Anyway, films that I would not have voted for Best Picture, that were nominated:

Hello, Dolly!, Dr Dolittle, Les Miserables (2012), The Kids are All Right, Call Me By Your Name, Million Dollar Baby, Brokeback Mountain, The Greatest Show on Earth, The Great Ziegfeld, Cimarron, The Cider House Rules, One Hundred Men and a Girl, Oliver!, Cleopatra (1963), Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Mutiny on the Bounty (1962), The Broadway Melody and The Broadway Melody of 1936, A Farewell to Arms, The Hollywood Revue, How the West was Won, Around the World in 80 Days, Ivanhoe, The Long Voyage Home, Anchors Aweigh, The Music Man, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The Sundowners, Nicholas and Alexandra, An Unmarried Woman, Chocolat, War Horse, Philomena

Stop with all these conjectures.I made the thread about pictures not about little pieces of them or actors. It´s pretty clear.

Ten of the worst ones as of 1990 from bad to worst…

    Darkest Hour (2017)
    Selma (2014)
    The Cider House Rules (1999)
    Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
    JFK (1991)
    Lost in Translation (2003)
    Sideways (2004)
    The Thin Red Line (1998)
    Master and Commander (2003)
    The Tree of Life (2011)

I just love movies. And awards.
