Stephen Sondheim & James Goldman’s 1971 Tony-winning musical, Follies, will be receiving a major film adaptation helmed by acclaimed British theatre director Dominic Cooke.

Composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim said in a statement “Over the years, there have been many attempts to bring Follies to the screen, but not until Dominic Cooke’s brilliant production at the National Theatre of Great Britain did it seem like it could be a real movie. I’m more than delighted, I’m thrilled, that it’s finally going to happen.”

Director Dominic Cooke said in his own statement “James Goldman’s skilful book nods as much to the golden age of movie musicals as to Broadway, so it feels like natural material to turn into a movie.”

Dominic Cooke did such a fantastic job adapting Ian McEwan’s novel On Chesil Beach for the big screen, so I’m very excited to see him tackling Sondheim next.

There is a cinematic element about the story’s shifts between past and present and between fantasy and reality that lead me to believe this could be adapted well.

Well, I guess my dream of winning the lottery and purchasing the film rights to direct myself are no longer a possibility…

    @vinny

your dream cast is a bit off in that the female leads – Phyllis and Sally – are in their 50’s if we accept the general timeframe for the original show. The remaining ladies should be 60+ – which really leaves Marion Cotillard WAAAY too young to play Solange LaFitte – and the widely varied ages of the rest of your cast are largely inappropriate as well (not trying to throw shade – I’m just sayin’)…

    MY dream cast:

    Phyllis – Nicole Kidman
Sally – A tough one ‘cuz she REALLY has to sing. I’d consider Chenoweth, maybe Zellweger, Diane Lane (if she can sing), ditto Laura Linney and Joan Allen…
    Ben – Jackman, absolutely…
Buddy – Image problems notwithstanding, I’d opt for Kevin Spacey…
Carlotta – Meryl Streep (Can’t wait to watch her belt out “I’m Still Here”…)
Hattie – Angela Lansbury, if she’s still up to it…
Solange – Tough one – maybe Adrienne Barbeau?
    Stella – Lesley Ann Warren
    Heidi – Betty Buckley
    Emily Whitman – Patti LuPone
    Theodore Whitman – Nathan Lane
    Dmitri Weissman – Joel Grey
