Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under The Influence

So, I’ve decided to rewatch this film on HBO-Max. Let’s talk about Gena Rowlands and her performance.

After rewatching,I can honestly say that she delivered the greatest performances in cinema history thus far. I had not seen this film in years and I tried my best to protect Ellen Burstyn’s win (who was magical herself). I love Burstyn in Alice but… lord have mercy. Possibly me getting older and dealing with alcoholics in my lifetime made her performance even more impactful. Her costar was incredible as well and I would have awarded him with a Best Actor statue. I am so happy that she has an honorary Oscar.

What are your feelings on her performance?

A truly amazing performance. I wouldn’t say it’s the best of all time, but it’s almost there.

I also very much like the film, which could have been a total snoozefest, but turn out to be extremely engaging and interesting. Kudos to John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands.

It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

That performance is what happens when talent, training and direction meet in the right place and the right time. It’s so wise that Rowlands and Cassavetes decided to make a film, not a play, because there’s no human can do this role eight days a week. No wonder that so many actors cited that this specific performance had inspired them to be actors. What a once-in-a-lifetime performance!

I can’t imagine anyone having the energy of playing such a role.
