One of last year’s Tony Award-winning musicals, Girl From the North Country (which utilizes the song catalogue of Bob Dylan), is set to receive a feature film adaptation. Conor McPherson, who wrote and directed the original stage version, is going to be at the helm. Woody Harrelson, Olivia Colman, Tosin Cole, and Chlöe Bailey have all been cast.

(Her character sings “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Forever Young.”) I get why producers would prefer Colman for the film but Winningham is not some unknown– she’s been nominated for Oscar, Golden Globe, SAG and Tony Awards (including a Tony for THIS part), and has won two Emmys and an Independent Spirit Award, and is a very good singer in the folk style. It’s not like the time they passed over Julie Andrews for Audrey Hepburn in the movie version of My Fair Lady, but still, I wish they had gone with Winningham, who was nominated for an Academy Award for playing a folk singer in Georgia.

It’s incredible how he’s gone from playing what was arguably the least popular companion in the revival of Doctor Who to head-lining a prestige drama with Courtney B. Vance and Aunjanue Ellis, having a supporting role in an Oscar buzzed biopic and now being cast in a Bob Marley biopic and an adaptation of a Broadway musical with Olivia Colman and Woody Harrelson.
I’m obviously not complaining haha (as unpopular an opinion as it may be I did actually quite like him on Doctor Who) but it reminds me of the whiplash I got when Margot Robbie suddenly went from being on Neighbours to starring in Richard Curtis and Martin Scorsese movies.

Although you’ll at least see what Mare Winningham was like as her character in a capture of the Broadway production that will be released at some point in the future.

I certainly share your opinion of Mare Winningham. I would have given her the Oscar for Georgia.
