    1. Roma – really quite striking and moving. I haven’t seen a film like this before, albeit the first 20 mins was quite a slog.

    2. The Favourite – wickedly delightful, and just so much fun throughout. Loses a bit of steam towards the end, like the vast bulk of Lanthimos’ films.

    3. Black Panther – this film has a lot on its mind, and was the first superhero film where there was a legitimate ethical struggle between hero and villain. Super engaging, but weird mistakes pull it back from greatness eg dodgy VFX, overly villainous behaviour by MB Jordan by the end, and a pat ending.

    4. A Star is Born – It’s pretty perfectly made, and I think the deflation you feel as it goes on is purposeful. But, there’s nothing in this film that hasn’t been said multiple times before, and sometimes you just want a bit more from a BP nominee.

    5. Blackkklansmen – I really don’t get the acclaim for this film. I love Spike Lee usually, and there are fun and moving sections, however there were just so many odd moments throughout. The overly in your face messaging which not only is unnecessary considering its audience, but also takes you out of the atmosphere of the film. The weird pacing and deflation in the final chase. The super odd choice to bend over backwards to show that police aren’t racist.

    6. Bohemian Rhapsody – I wish that I hadn’t seen this film. Changes facts to tell worse/more pat narratives about a queer icon.

Haven’t seen Vice and Green Book.

Films that I wish had replaced, but I knew never would: Annihilation, Suspiria, Shoplifters, Support the Girls.

I still have to see The favourite

1- Roma (I’m mexican but I don’t think I’m biased, it’s just an awesome movie for me- Cuarón made an auteur film of epic scale with subtelty and the result is both beautiful and heartwrenching)
2- A star is born (Great filmmaking from a first-time director, awesome performances from all the cast, solid cinematography, editing and sound, very round film)
3- Vice (It was a heavy movie, too much info and very fast-paced at times, but it was directed with so much energy! The experimental mix of documentary+fiction+satire was interesting, and Christan Bale creats a memorable monster)

4- BlackKklansman- Fine filmmaking from Spike Lee, the music, the recreation of the time, the cast and the script, all are very good.
5- Black Panther- It was fine, I really liked the two other flicks made by Coogler and I think BP is not as cool, but it works. Michael B. Jordan stands out, plus the world design, the music & soundtrack are great)

6- Green Book- Solid tale of friendship, effective script and two very good actors giving their best. Their chemistry is the soul of the movie
7- Bohemian Rhapsody- It was ok, I expected nothing and I had fun with this biopic. The drama didn’t work for me, but the main cast, all the four “Queen”, IS the movie. Obviously the music is awesome. I don’t understand the Rami hype, he gave a solid performance but I think it was a collective effort, much like Chadwick Boseman in Black Panther.

    1. Roma (A+)

    2. The Favourite (A)

    3. A Star is Born (B/B+)

    4. BlacKkKlansman (B)

    5. Black Panther (B)

    ————————-

    6. Vice (C)

    7. Bohemian Rhapsody (C-)

I intend to watch Green Book eventually. I expect it to top the latter two at the very least.
