If Fennell wins here, I think that makes PYW the frontrunner for the Oscar. Pulling an upset over what was thought to be the assumed frontrunner is a big ass deal.

    I’d love to see it.

A bit like Hildur Guonadottir last year.

Not saying she’s locked for the win (she could very well easily still lose the Globe to Sorkin) but if she wins the Globe she’s very much locked for the Oscar win.

I have a weird feeling we’re going to get a WTF win on Sunday. Even more WTF than my prediction of Promising Young Woman winning Motion Picture – Drama.

But I am too scared to predict so many WTF wins lol.

No I don’t think they are thinking that. I think they are more likely to consider the identity and demographics of the Director when voting for Director than they are when voting for Best Film.

Two female directed films in BP Drama and they award a male directed one? Very good for an institution which public image is already under scrutiny.

I feel it’s closer to their natural tastes.

There’s no such a thing as a HFPA natural taste.

And exactly twice in the 19 years before that making my statement true.

And exactly three since the preferential ballot started. Four if you count that Roma would’ve won if it was eligible.

Two female directed films in BP Drama and they award a male directed one? Very good for an institution which public image is already under scrutiny.

Except no one but you is scrutinizing this particular fact. As a statistic it’s a double edged sword, you’ve noticed a pattern of behaviour and instead of predicting it’ll continue you think they’ll notice and reverse course without being pushed. There was a massive backlash to to no female Directors in the past and no female Director winning since Barbra Streisand and that’s a least part of the reason there’s three female nominees this year. It’ll be a weak think piece about how they awarded a female director but not her film. The more likely PR disaster is #GlobesSoWhite.

It’s my opinion that if Nomadland wins it’s because they liked it best as a film not because it was directed by a woman.

There’s no such a thing as a HFPA natural taste.

Of course there is, no awards body is without their bias and preferences.

And exactly three since the preferential ballot started. Four if you count that Roma would’ve won if it was eligible.

It’s you that choose the time period from the turn of the century. But the point was lone director aren’t that rare they happen about twice a decade, which isn’t that much more or less frequency than the combination you are predicting.

Time period is very important because the voting system literally changed 11 years ago.

Maybe it was exaggerated to say Directing only winners are rare but the fact is, under the current system, the scenario I’m predicting happened as much often as the scenario you’re predicting. However, I think Nomadland has a narrative that Hugo, Gravity and The Shape of Water lacked. If this narrative is real or not, we’re gonna know this Sunday. I’ll leave this discussion here.

Yesterday the globes had a statement about looking to bring in african american members. that is not something a serious organization would have to do daysbefore a ceremony. I really do not think they will have the influence they used to have in the prior years.

The HFPA’s statement is the most basic one they could have released. I’ll believe it when I see it. For now I am not believing sh*t.

Fuck the HFPA. I will stick to my illegal stream on Sunday. Unfortunately they won’t become obsolete for the industry unless there’s a mass A-lister boycott, and idk of any of these actors have the guts for that.

    FYC:

Best Director - Lee Isaac Chung (Minari), Darius Marder (Sound of Metal)

Lead Actor - Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal)

Supporting Actor - Paul Raci (Sound of Metal)

Supporting Actress - Youn Yuh-jung (Minari)

Their influence comes from being on TV and driving media coverage of the awards race — if anything, they’re going to have more influence this year than in any recent cycle because the way the timeline got reshuffled means their ceremony is happening well before everybody else.

I saw that statement released by HFPA after being criticized for not having no Black members and YES, I believe it when I see it.
