All the complaints about A24 not promoting Aftersun just to have Paul hop in the race regardless would be FAB.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 25, 2022 at 10:34 am #1205132215Just a reminder: It would be unprecedented to have any more than 5 acting nominees from the Gothams make the Oscar 20.

There are complaints about A24 not promoting it ENOUGH? I’ve heard and seen non-stop chatter about and promotion for it lol. Maybe there’s just so much passion for it that has translated like this?

I think that is exactly it! 😂
ReplyCopy URLOctober 25, 2022 at 10:41 am #1205132239I don’t think Mescal will sweep the trifecta since there are many fans of Banshees among the members but I guess a win or two with them could really give him a push like it did with Cruz last season.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 25, 2022 at 5:37 pm #1205132824Brian Tyree Henry got in. Which I know, doesn’t mean very much but here’s the thing…Best Supporting Actor doesn’t really have a frontrunner right now. I can genuinely see BTH winning here. Anybody else? And if he does? Will people put him in their Top Oscar 5? I think BTH has a good shot at getting in the Oscar Top 5 based on his reviews and the amount of love for him right now – this includes industry support and genuine critics love. He is sort of in this magical phase of his career where I just feel like an Oscar nomination makes perfect sense. I am not saying he wins (even though I have him there right now, but that’s because like I said idk who else would win and I am sure I will change this around a couple more times). I don’t even have Brad Pitt in my Top Oscar 5 purely out of spite (I picked Tobey lmfao, idgaf so whatever). But I think it is just very likely BTH gets in the top five. But him getting in without Lawrence is extremely unlikely to me. I don’t see him getting a lone nom. So, this is why to me, Lawrence is in a very weird spot. I know several have written her off and think she has no chance in lead, especially after the announcement that Michelle Williams is going lead. I get that. It’s a super long shot. But I really do feel like Brian Tyree Henry can get in – basing it largely on career momentum. I feel like he is lowkey beloved and everyone wants this for him right now. Wants to see him Oscar nominated. And again him being the lone nomination simply doesn’t make sense. So, yeah…I still have Lawrence in my five for Actress. Even if she missed Gotham. 100/1 odds. Delusional? Well if it is, it is.
But I just…have a feeling.
I am predicting BTH right now, but Supporting Actor clearly has a frontrunner. Quan is the frontrunner and is basically unchallenged by now (maybe Gleeson came to give him some competition).
ReplyCopy URLOctober 25, 2022 at 5:46 pm #1205132837At this point in the race last year, nobody had any idea about Ariana Debose’s performance in WSS and she went on to win. Many people online kept insisting Kirsten Dunst would win Best Supporting Actress handily. And then?
Things are still very fluid. That is what I mean by no clear frontrunner. We don’t even know who will be the final five! Aside from a couple potentially telling wins (like Cate getting the Volpi) it is hard to gauge who is ahead, it is a guessing game. Right now it is simply who will likely get nominated and who likely won’t get nominated. I am not yet convinced Quan wins. But I am certainly not against him winning!

I think her performance is just fine but not as outstanding as Quan’s and Yeoh’s. All this hype for her to get a nom came mostly from our love toward the film itself.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 25, 2022 at 11:53 pm #1205132965A very solid list! I’ve seen a few of these films but still need to catch up. Was hoping Jeremy Pope got in Lead Performance. He’s exceptional in The Inspection.

I disagree. She gave, IMHO, the best performance of the film.

nah don’t worry , olivia colman missed for the favourite and swept every critic award , hsu is safe
ReplyCopy URLOctober 26, 2022 at 7:37 am #1205133125This is the second time I’ve seen someone suggest that the passion for Hsu and her character only comes from the writing or the movie (I saw someone say this on Twitter as well). Couldn’t it be possible that Hsu did a phenomenal job with the material and fans recognize this and want her along for the awards ride? What is the root of this cynicism? You don’t have to like Hsu’s performance, but I’m very certain Hsu’s performance had a lot to do with why the role is so well-received. No need to undercut something as simple as this.

The Favourite was awarded a special jury prize for ensemble performance for the three central women which I believe ruled them out of contention for the main acting categories.
