We don’t ever seem to talk about the writing awards as much as we should on here. In this category(which is in some ways my favorite at the Oscars) my favorites(in no particular order) are:

    1. Get Out
    2. Annie Hall
    3. Hannah And Her Sisters
    4. Midnight In Paris
    5. Crash
    6. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
    7. Network
    8. Manchester By The Sea
    9. Django Unchained
    10. Little Miss Sunshine
    11. American Beauty
    12. Fargo
    13. On The Waterfront
    14. Chinatown
    15. Milk

    Yours?

Difficult to choose a “best” off all-time. Screenplays are so different, with subject matter, style and execution. So you can’t really lump them together to determine an absolute “best”.

With that said, Manchester By The Sea, I feel, is ONE OF THE BEST WRITTEN screenplays in recent memory. It reads like a dream, and translates beautifully onscreen. Stunning!

    GET OUT……NO. Just NO.

Why don’t you like Get Out?

Definitely Get Out. The reason why people hate that screenplay is because it seems pretty linear and straight-forward at the surface and it beat 3B – a great dialogue driven screenplay at the Oscar. But when you dig deeper into it, there are some smart underlying metaphors hidden here and there. And as a whole this screenplay runs smoothly, like there are no flaws, no silly moments like sometimes in 3B.

Manchester by the Sea’s screenplay is sooooooooooo stunning, my goodness.

I would say The Favourite and Lady Bird too but…

Get Out has a stunning screenplay. By far one of the most deserving winners.

Yeah The Favourite would easily be on mine too but I guess the Academy’s issue with not honoring Best Picture winners with a Screenplay win as well got in the way of them honoring it.

Guys, we’re talking about the “best here”

    Citizen Kane. Chinatown is second.

Eternal Sunshine is definitely my favorite of the millennium.

Also, 2018 had such a strong top 3 in this category (3BB, GO, LB) that any of them winning would’ve been great in my opinion.

I’ll pretend that The Favourite won and say that, but in keeping with this nightmare of a reality where it didn’t win, Get Out and Manchester by the Sea for sure.

I completely agree. The Favourite not winning screenplay is one of the Academy’s biggest mistakes. My favorites are:

    Get Out
    Manchester by the Sea
    Little Miss Sunshine
    Lost in Translation
    Almost Famous
    Thelma & Louise

Chinatown and Citizen Kane are great too although I personally find Citizen Kane overrated.

Yep that was one of the Academy’s largest mishaps. The Favourite was robbed of the Best Original Screenplay prize.
