    Unrelated to the poll, but my god, Kidman truly has one of the most fascinating and versatile filmographies of any actress in her generation.

    1995 was a great year for the Best Actress race.
    The final Oscar nominees shortlist was quite impressive imo:
    * Susan Sarandon, Dead Man Walking (WINNER)
    * Elisabeth Shue, Leaving Las Vegas
    * Sharon Stone, Casino
    * Meryl Streep, The Bridges of Madison County
    * Emma Thompson, Sense & Sensibility

    The only nominee I could switch for Kidman would be Sharon Stone, but even Stone was great in that Martin Scorsese movie

    Stone’s nod is a lock for the category. She earned it. And it’s also an acknowledgement of her 90s movie stardom.

    1995 was crazy. You can make a case for plenty of actresses snubbed. Nicole, Angela Bassett and Julianne Moore deserved a spot.

    I’m surprised no one is commenting Rabbit Hole.

    “Moulin Rouge!” All of Kidman’s talents, glamour, and stature were used to full effect here, and this performance helped fuel the momentum to her Oscar win the following year.

    Let’s also not forget Jennifer Jason Leigh in Georgia. Both 1995 and 1996 were incredible for the sheer depth around the Best Actress race. Of course, given the nominees, despite how strong they were, Whoopi Goldberg was still able to make the joke that Shue, Stone, and Sorvino (Supporting) all got nominated for playing a hooker…”how many times did Charlie Sheen get to vote?”

    Back to the topic, I actually find Kidman’s later career work to be superior. She seemed much surer of herself as an actress and let herself rip. I still felt a real distance and self-consciousness before, especially with her younger work. For example, I love the movie The Portrait of a Lady, and Kidman is fine in it, but she’s far from giving an incredible performance she would have been capable of doing later on in her career. Barbra Hershey, Martin Donovan, and even John Malkovich sort of doing a Valmont redux carried the film, Hershey especially.

    Yes…! It was a great year for 5 performances only to be nominated

    Kidman started working with an acting coach (Susan Batson) when she made Eyes Wide Shut. That’s why there’s a consistency to her work now.

    Yea I went with Dogville, not sure why as I haven’t seen that movie in maybe a decade, but that might also be why. It’s a devastating watch and Kidman is a big part of that.

    Of her more mainstream work, I’d probably vote for The Hours for the train station scene alone, but I agree that Moulin Rouge is definitely her best “movie star” performance. But with all that said (and I haven’t seen some of her classics like The Others or Eyes Wide Shut), Big Little Lies season 1 might be the top for me.

    The Paperboy, Stoker, and Lion on the poll while The Others is being left out?
