Since Joker’s come out, I thought it would be fun to vote for who gave the best cinematic performance as one of the greatest villains of all time.

I chose to exclude Mark Hamill and Zach Galifianakas, since while they did play the role on the big screen, voice acting is very different from acting in front of a camera. For what it’s worth, Hamill is my second favorite overall, and most fans will agree that he’s the definitive voice of the Joker.

With the exception of Leto’s awful interpretation, I believe all these men gave great performances in their own rights. However, my favorite is Ledger. Without a doubt my favorite supporting and villainous performance, and quite possibly my favorite performance of all time. I’d rank them:

    1. Heath Ledger

    2. Joaquin Phoenix

    3. Jack Nicholson

    4. Cesar Romero

    5. Jared Leto

    This is an unfair thread.

Joaquin plays Joker for 5-10 mins whereas he is Arthur Fleck for rest of the time.

Jack and Ledger were Jokers for majority of time.

They’re all wildly different takes on the character so it all evens out. Also, Joaquin has the advantage of being his film’s sole lead, something the others weren’t (although Nicholson was a co-lead). People will be comparing Phoenix to other Jokers for years, better get used to it.

Ledger and Nicholson were playing Joker rather than a psychotic failed comedian.

Comparison will happen but they ain’t fair.

I would like to see Joaquin playing Joker in whole movie and then see where thing stands.

Heath is best “Joker”,Joaquin is best pre “Joker”.

Ledger for sure, although Phoenix is possibly more impressive given that he had to overcome some bad material. I also don’t consider Arthur Fleck to be the same Joker that the other actors are playing. I mean, there’s no way in hell that guy ends up becoming batman’s most formidable foe.

They are different takes but I prefer Phoenix. He’s creepier.

Darlings, Jack Nicholson was classy and Dead Ledger was decent. The rest are unbearable.

I think best performance goes to Phoenix. He had a 3D character with nuance. The best comic book adaptation though goes to Ledger as he hews very closely to that while also being very entertaining.

Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is so much closer to the comic book material than any of the other choices.

Ledger’s Joker was fine but he was playing a 2-dimensional villain.

If any of you actually watch Batman animated films or read the comics, you will get behind Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>I watch Batman animated films/shows and read comics and I can easily say that Ledger’s interpretation was the closest to capture the character as written. Sure, there’s a lot of differences, but I believe his take got the essence of the Joker in a way the others didn’t. That’s not a bad thing on their part, as different interpretations are very much welcome in my mind. Also, Ledger’s version was not 2 dimensional. Yes, he’s completely evil with zero redeeming qualities, but there’s still so much to his characterization, even if you put aside any speculation about his past. Anyway, can you actually explain why you think Joaquin’s is the closest to the comic book material? Cause I’d say he’s the furthest. Again, that’s not a bad thing, as I believe Phoenix did a phenomenal job reworking the character. There’s many key differences, such as how he’s one of the most sympathetic takes on this part that’s usually a complete monster, he’s not actually a criminal mastermind, and we actually get a definitive look at his life before he became the villain we all know (the last point also applies to Nicholson, although unlike Phoenix, his version was always an awful villain, just one who loses all inhibitions once he becomes the clown). So I’m genuinely curious why you think his is the closest to the source material.</p>

I have respect for Joaquin as Joker for elevating bad material and really conveying the pain better than the script can. But Heath Ledger is a truly amazing performance, and the menace and implied backstory is so strong.

This isn’t quite apples to apples, though. Give Joaquin a followup where he’s an antagonist, give him those super tense interactions with Batman since those are what made Heath Ledger’s performance go from great to masterful.

Ledger. Doubtful that his Joker will ever be rivaled or equaled.
