If Mortensen went Supporting I don’t think would’ve won because I think no one would’ve bought that fraud.

It’s true that he never would’ve gotten away with it. Being a big name commuting such unbelievably blatant fraud would’ve gotten him into lead anyway, just like Kate Winslet. But if he somehow got away with it, he would’ve been a lock. His reviews and hype were just as strong as Mahershala’s. Posters on here tried so hard and for so long to push the idea the idea of Grant winning when Ali was such an obvious frontrunner, and now they’re doing the same thing again.

Also, I’m saying this as a fan of Grant. I’d vote him over either of those leading turns in the supporting category, but he lost to Ali, and he would’ve lost to Viggo too.

There was definitely a lot more hype around Viggo than Grant.

    There was not.

More hype is probably the wrong phrasing. I should say that there would be more of a narrative for Viggo. He would be seen as overdue after two previous nominations and he would’ve been the most popular actor in the supporting category.

I disagree, I don’t think the industry would push a narrative for him at all. Grant would have more passion with the critics push alone.

Viggo’s reviews and hype were equal to Mahershala, so why wouldn’t he have won?

I literally said it numerous times. And I totally disagree, Mahershala had WAAAAAAAAAY more hype than he did. Viggo was nearly forgettable that season.

Its the same situation as Brad and Leo. They both had equal praise and hype, with the “supporting” contender only gaining hype due to frauding himself into supporting, which meant that he was a guaranteed win and therefore had more talk than his leading contender who nobody thought was winning.

You wish. And besides, you bring up the critics’ dominance for Grant, but that alone does not guarantee you an Oscar win. Not everyone can be a Regina King.

Leo had already won anyway, and Brad hadn’t, at least for acting. It would’ve been the EXACT situation for Mahershala and Viggo if Mahershala went lead and Viggo went supporting.

I wish this scenario did happen because Mortensen is deserving of an Oscar by now and Ali sure as hell doesn’t deserve to have two.

I don’t have to wish cause it’s true. All the attention went to Mahershala even before the award shows started, Viggo not being able to gain more attention than a previous Oscar winner says a lot but okay. There’s no “equal hype” that you guys keep mentioning between them like there was for Brad and Leo.

Did Viggo have more screen time than Mahershala in the movie?

Yea definitely. I can’t remember, did Mahershala have any significant screentime alone with the camera? I know Mortensen had plenty.

He had a few moments, but Viggo definitely had more scenes devoted to himself without Mahershala than the other way around. Still, the vast majority of their screen time is them together.

Okay then, attempting to push Viggo into Supporting definitely wouldn’t have worked if he had even slightly more screen time than Mahershala.
