Exactly. European accents have just as much regional variation as American ones do, but so many Americans commenting seem to have no concept of this idea.

    OMG THIS.

Don’t have anything particular to say about the quality of these accents as I don’t know enough about what they should sound like (and neither do the Americans saying they’re awful, presumably), but as a British person with a regional accent – in my experience, Americans generally have little concept of regional variations outside of the US.

Critics don’t matter with this one imo. Unless it’s VERY bad. Like, unwatchable. What this movie needs is commercial success. If it’s very successful, with that cast, and that baity presentation/plot, the members of the Academy are not going to be able to resist themselves. We already saw it with Bohemian Rapsody, Jojo Rabbit and Joker.

    This. I agree

    Sadly it’s true.

About the trailer. It’s a very fast paced. We only saw the great Cinematography. It’s a Very Commercial Style. But it totally Worked. Greatest trailer since the PROMETHEUS Trailers

I don’t care whether accents are authentic or nor and no way that genral audience knows either. All that matters is whether they are fun or annoying. These sound like fun.

I really did not like the cinematography, it looks like an episode of Modern Family

Well this isnt finished and it shows. Thats why the scenes were so short in the trailer. Some clips like the skiing ones look better probably cause they were filmed first, there i can see some good screen work.

Regardless, the movie is still promising.

Agreed one million percent. I have a huge Italian family. These accents were nailed. Leto…..well he went to the one people most know but it works.

Honestly pretty much every Italian person I’ve seen comment on it has said the same.

There are British people I know who sound like idiots trying to imitate my accent. Regional variations can be really significant.

I honestly feel like they are trying to do a Dick Van Dyke impersonation half the time if they have seen Mary Poppins here in America. It’s always that ot some weird COLIN Firth-ish one lol. I am Italian American and I swear every time someone says u speak italian and goes all Peter Griffin from Family Guy (U know the clip hopefully but its bobba da boopi bippa di bappa UGH) and I’m like not real italian. And of course its followed by “you have to be wrong”. Not Like I am surrpunded by the real dialects 100 percent of the time since birth lol. (1/2 from Calabria but the ones in Italy some moved to other areas and adopted the dialects there so I have been around basically all of southern italian dialects now since birth lol).

Accents discussions are so pointless. Like other than Italian people is this gonna bother anyone else? And they’d be pretty happy to get a movie of this size about strictly Italian people.

I am from northern Italy (like Patrizia Reggiani) and I can confirm that we speak English with quite a different accent from people from southern Italy. I am also a linguist, so…

Leto’s accent is the most exaggerated and stereotypical (also kinda wrong), but it might work if you want camp and a ridiculous character. Lady Gaga does not pronounce certain words in the way that we would (listen to how she says “seductive”, “but”, “ethical” and “house”), but more importantly her tongue is not loose enough, so she ends up doing sort of a post-alveolar Russian “r”, which is super weird for me. Did she watch “Killing Eve” in order to learn how to do accents? 😂

That said, I think it will be more evident if she does a lot of voice over in the movie. If she has mostly snappy dialogue, most people won’t notice or they’ll close an eye.
