I am from northern Italy (like Patrizia Reggiani) and I can confirm that we speak English with quite a different accent from people from southern Italy. I am also a linguist, so…

Leto’s accent is the most exaggerated and stereotypical (also kinda wrong), but it might work if you want camp and a ridiculous character. Lady Gaga does not pronounce certain words in the way that we would (listen to how she says “seductive”, “but”, “ethical” and “house”), but more importantly her tongue is not loose enough, so she ends up doing sort of a post-alveolar Russian “r”, which is super weird for me. Did she watch “Killing Eve” in order to learn how to do accents? 😂

That said, I think it will be more evident if she does a lot of voice over in the movie. If she has mostly snappy dialogue, most people won’t notice or they’ll close an eye.

Always great to hear from people who actually know what they’re talking about. I know very little about Italian accents but Leto did seem like he was voicing Super Mario in a Nintendo game than an actual person to me.

But why not just cast actual Italian actors in these roles? I’m sure there’s plenty of them who would love to work with Ridley Scott. This all seems so cheap.

cause no one would watch it

If accents were pointless they would not have bothered to try Italian accents.Regardless if the screenplay is good, everyone will ignore the forced accents. If screenplay is bad, the accents will just add to the laughing stock the movie will become.

This. The real test is in the fluidity they’ll speak with and from the trailer we can’t judge that because there are no proper scenes. You can tell they work seriously on that tho (Gaga at least) despite the early reports.

Its funny, tho, how there is so much discussion about the accents for this film yet nobody cared about them in the TLD trailer. Literally that one is supposedly set on France in the 14th century and they seem to be on Suffolk or something with those thick English accents lmao

Asked someone on AW who has read it for a rundown of this one and yeah Adam Driver has a LOT to do.

    Yup.

I just rewatched the trailer and honestly the most surprising thing about it is how much it seems to lean into sexiness – for a Ridley Scott movie.

OMG that’s exactly where my mind went. It was very Killing Eve-esque.

Gaga accent >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Chastain’s toothache prosthetics yet Toothache is considered a heavyweight while Gaga is considered a lightweight this season and her aqccent is analyzed and dissected as if she’s Eliza Doolittle or some s***.

It’s just a trailer. A very fast paced trailer. So, maybe the sexiness is not real. But the trailer worked great. This very fast paced trailer works in our crazy times

I hope sexiness is real. People want sexiness. That’s why Bridgerton and Sex/Life are such huge hits.

I was thinking about this just the other day—in films, the Academy has gotten a lot more…prudish? It might be happenstance. The Favourite and CMBYN are probably the last films with strong sexual motivations & nudity, but I think we can all agree that the sex was…timid.

If I think back to The Piano, In the Bedroom, The Reader, Brokeback Mountain, American Beauty, it just feels like film awards are going the opposite way of TV and becoming more sex/nudity-averse, not less.

I lurk on AW, there are a few people over there who claim to have read parts of the script who said there are ‘multiple’ sex scenes in it. Take that with a big dollop of salt of course.

Please be true! How reliable are those people? Same who broke the news that Blonde and MacBeth miswed Venice cause they sucked?

You could be right that people want sex. But, personally, I thought Bridgerton was mediocre and Sex/Life was even worse
